(Season 3, Episodes 8-9)
So… what’s wrong with me? Nine episodes through the infamous season three of Veronica Mars, and I think I’m enjoying it more than season one or two. In this group of episodes, the serial rapist storyline was wrapped up, and I think “Spit & Eggs” was one of the better episodes of the entire series. Does it get a whole lot worse after this? Am I missing something?
I sort of liked the mini-arc format. Every one of the nine episodes early in the season felt important and pertinent to the rape mystery. There were no filler episodes, all the mysteries seemed to focus on characters that we care about instead of random walk-ins at Mars Investigation. Overall, I think I like season three the most. I have a bunch more episodes to go, though, so I can’t say if that feeling will last.
“Lord of the Pi’s”
It was kind of fun seeing Patty Hearst guest star as… well, essentially herself. Heck, even the fake school is named after her. It was definitely a nice touch having her on the show. This ended up being an intriguing episode too, with quite the crazy mystery.
There was a ton of Veronica and Logan angst in this episode. I thought for sure that they were going to break up (and that’s not the first time I’ve thought that this season), but they decided to “go easier on each other.” This relationship is doomed, and I’m pretty much okay with that at this point. Logan has fallen into whiny and annoying territory. I’m really sick of seeing the wide-eyed, mouth hanging open look. What is the deal with that? Is he trying to catch bugs?
The other big revelation in this episode was the discovery that the Lilith House girls faked Claire’s rape to get more attention focused on the issue. That’s pretty extreme.
“Spit & Eggs”
Like I said in the open, I thought this was one of the best episodes of the whole series. It definitely felt like a season finale with the rapist story line wrapping up, but I guess that was the point. There was definitely a lot of tension, and it set up the next mystery of the season (rest of the season?).
I really enjoyed how everything played out in this episode. I thought Mercer made a great villain, but I just knew that Moe was going to end up being an accomplice as soon as he started to help Veronica. Man, if I were her I wouldn’t ever drink anything I didn’t pour myself, regardless of where I was and who I was with. What is it? Three times that she’s been slipped GHB now? Poor Veronica. Logan dumped her too, that’s got to hurt. Seeing him get himself thrown in jail just to wail on Mercer though was great to see. He obviously still cares for Veronica a lot.
I was sad to see the Dean killed. He was a great character, and had really good chemistry with Veronica. I hope that the mystery of his death will be as compelling as the rapist mystery was….
Bad things to come
-If you don’t like the wussier Logan get ready for more of that. They messed up his character too much this season.
-Logan/Veronica drama is going to get even more tiring.
-She looks for a monkey. And the next one isn’t that good of an episode either.
-Piz finally assumes the role of Duncan 2.0 in terms of uselessness.
-An episode that reeks of after school special.
-A great SEASON finale that sets you up for an interesting season 4. Since there is no season 4 though the show just leaves you hanging.
-The mystery arcs dissipate slowly to relationship arcs.
THE GOOD to come…
-Mars Bars and Papa’s Cabin. Along with Spit and Eggs they made up some of the best episodes ever of the show.
-Paul Rudd
-More Vinnie Van Lowe
AS FOR 8&9
-I loved how they used Patty Hearst for the role since the relationship between Mercer and Moe is similar to the one between Hearst and her real life captors.
-I like how they made the lousy prisoner/guard experiment useful by it being how it brought Moe into Mercer’s power. Note how Moe refers to Mercer as “Sir” and how Mercer calls Moe “prisoner.” Even the pic Veronica finds of them together (the oh shit Moe is bad moment) Mercer is in the guard camouflage and Moe is in the prisoner blue.
It’s interesting. I started watching VM with season 3 and loved it. When S3 went on winter break I watched S1 & S2 on DVD. I was even for the Piz-Veronica match up. However, when S3 returned, I saw all of the flaws b-boarders at the time pointed out. So, it’ll be interesting to see what you think at S3’s close -
Yeah the mystery in the season 3 finale, and now series finale, really should have been the main mystery for the second half of the season, that was such a great story.
And everything AC said I agree with, it just makes for a real crap of a season. The characters act like CW versions of their former selves… oh wait…
I definitely didn’t think it was Mercer, so they got me good there. I figured Moe was involved somehow, but how it all fit together with the prison experiment really seemed to work. At the time you thought it was a time-filler and excuse to put Logan & Wallace on screen together, but there were other reasons… I’m afraid to say that I didn’t really know who Patty Hearst was, so that aspect didn’t have the intended impact on me.
AC is right on the money with the good and bad things to come. Although I love Logan & Veronica together, I think some of their best moments are when they are apart (and I’m talking about seasons 1 & 2 now). However, what happens to them in the coming episodes just annoys the crap out of me! I won’t spoil it, but it really was all pointless considering how they left things at the end of Spit & Eggs. And I loved the fact that Logan went to jail just to get revenge on Mercer. Though would they honestly put them all in the same cell…?
The murder mystery gets wrapped up before the end of the season (over 7 episodes I think?), and then it really is just a bunch of relationship nonsense. That’s when I think most fans started to get a bad taste in their mouth. It turned into a “who’s dating who” show rather than a cool mystery show.
Yeah, CW dropped 2-4 episodes from the order and that screwed up the writer’s final story that would have made a main character the bad guy/gal.
Oreo: I’ve never heard that story, but it sounds cool. Do you have any more detail?
It’s important to remember that season 3 is only considered bad compared to season 1 and 2. In the grand scheme of TV, it’s still part of one of the best shows ever. At the end of it all the character of Veronica remains awesome — as does Kristin Bell’s performance — and that’s really what the show boils down to (not to diminish the other awesomeness).
Yes that’s stay Veronica Mars so it’s better than most of the tv shows. I agree with ac for the good and the bad things, the final is very good : a introduction for an awesome season 4 but CW decided it was not meant to be…
And for me this last season is not the best because it’s too much Veronica and not enough her equally good second characters and the girl is becoming to be very judgmental..
But yes Spitt and Eggs is very good and the Dean :
awesome (i mean it’s Ed Begley Jr so it’s not really a surprise).
