(Season One, Episodes 13 & 14)
I will admit, Moonlight has steadily grown on me, especially in the last several episodes. I’m still pretty tough on it, though, because I think the premise is unoriginal, I don’t really like their vampire ‘rules,’ and I have been fairly creeped out by the romantic angle of the show. That being said, the storylines have gotten tighter, we’ve seen more of Josef (and more of Josef/Mick, which is a great relationship), and I might finally be seeing some light at the end of the Beth/Mick tunnel.
“Fated to Pretend”
Josef may be a vampire, maybe a sarcastic bastard, but when he paused long enough to tell Beth that he was sorry about Maureen’s death, he was truly compassionate. Josef is an interesting contradiction. I also loved how he pushed Mick’s buttons (by throwing him around his apartment) before eventually turning him back. That was a big sacrifice for Josef after Sarah. I wonder, though, why Josef didn’t just get a couple of his guys and go save the two of them.
Mick’s journey into the life of a human has had some cool side effects. His chase with Perez was fun, having lost all of the powers that made his job easy for the last fifty years. The bit with his Guillemo was also funny, but to be honest, they lost me on all of the food stuff. I mean its odd to me that just because he drinks blood he can’t eat regular food … Most vampire lore’s that I’m used to don’t have that little tweak.
“Click”
Why is Beth having lunch with the new ADA? She admitted her love for Mick, which he basically returned. But now she’s having lunch with the guy that replaced her ex-boyfriend, Josh. Yes they had a “shared experience’ (something I’m actually not making light of, for a change), but if I were Mick, I’d be a bit … jealous. I did really like the looks they gave each other.
Ok, I guess I should go all ‘full disclosure’ mode now: As much as I have disliked the idea of Beth and Mick together, the little dance they are doing now is pretty cute. The “…From dating to speed dating!” line, in particular, was nice. I like how Beth is actually twisted Mick’s tale about the whole thing. I also liked the way she protected Mick, but I think it was unnecessary to keep the secret. It’s just the kind that ends up eating at you. And with Talbot in possession of the photographs, not much good was done.
There are few things in this world I find as detestable as paparazzi. They, in my mind, share the ninth circle of hell with the traitors like Judas (Yes, surprise, I do read). I don’t know how celebrities (and faux-celebrities, as well, I guess) handle it. I would be one of guys that takes a 2×4 to their car windshields.
