Diary of a Gossip Girl Virgin – It’s the same stories again and again

Gossip Girl S02E02

(Season 2, Episode 2)

Gossip Girl desperately needs some new writers because this bunch just can’t stop using tired storylines. I mean, come on, how many more times do I need to hear the “my ex is secretly banging the American stepmother of my British revenge tool who also happens to be a lord” thing? It was interesting the first two times they did it on Dynasty but now to use it again just seems lazy.

“Never Been Marcused”

Of course, I was joking about the tired storyline. If anything, I was blown away by the sheer ridiculousness of the intricate situations. It often feels like the show tries really, really hard to go campy but it always stops just short, staying in this weird middle ground, forced teenage drama and high soap complexity’s grotesquely mutated bastard child.

So, as it turns out, Blair’s potential future stepmother-in-law also happens to be the cougar Nate has been screwing on the side. Naturally, the writers gave her an American accent to completely throw us off the trail. I’m still a little bummed out about the way Nate/Vanessa has turned out. Nate’s out sleeping with hotter, older women and Vanessa’s left wearing neon peasant blouses in makeshift coffeehouses. It’s a real shame. On top of all that nonsense, Nate also has to deal with the whole new “being poor” thing, thanks to his father.

Serena and Dan also decided that they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, rekindling their romance/teen horniness through chocolate strawberries, Nylon magazine and the privacy of the ever-classy bus toilet. I don’t see anything particularly wonderful about the Serena/Dan combination, but I’m willing to see where this goes. At least Dan’s not acting like that completely out-of-character playboy from last episode anymore.

The Humphrey family mini-reunion was a nice break from the bitchiness of the rest of the characters. I’m starting to feel like the adults’ drama is more intriguing than that of the younger crowd. Maybe I’ll be proven completely wrong though, since The CW decided to not to go through with that Valley Girls spin-off.
