A return to Twin Peaks? Even without David Lynch, I’m on board

feature

Twin PeaksIf you aren’t signed up for the CliqueClack Twitter feed, you may have missed this little bit of news. According to IMDb, Kyle MacLachlan wants to bring Dale Cooper back to our TV screens. Well, not quite our TV screens. He is interested in reviving the cult classic Twin Peaks in webisode form. MacLachlan goes on to say that David Lynch wouldn’t be available to collaborate on these webisodes.

Anyone who knows me well would be shocked at my next statement: I don’t care if David Lynch is too busy pushing transcendental meditation to get involved — I want more Twin Peaks!

That may sound like sacrilege to some big David Lynch fans, and believe me, I consider myself one of them. I’m one of the few Twin Peaks fans who also loved the Fire Walk With Me movie. In fact, I haven’t seen a David Lynch movie I haven’t been fascinated with, and I’ve seen just about every one of them. Some call him weird for the sake of being weird, among other things, but I think the man is pure genius.

So … why, then, do I not really care if Lynch returns to help out with the Twin Peaks webisodes? Well, for one, David Lynch wasn’t as involved with Twin Peaks as a lot of people give him credit for. Certainly he had a lot to do with the show, but for a lot of the episodes he was off making Wild at Heart. Mark Frost was equally, if not more, involved with the show than Lynch.

With that being said, I should hope that MacLachlan is smart enough to leave most of the completely bizarre Lynchian elements alone and just focus on giving fans a dose of Dale Cooper. Who wouldn’t want to see Cooper back on the screen, talking to Diane through his tape recorder (well, now I would imagine it would be a small digital recorder). Really, as long as they don’t touch the insane cliff hanger from the series finale, I would be happy. I’m sure a lot of people would love to get answers about what would happen next, and I can appreciate that, but not when Lynch (and presumably Frost as well) is sitting on the bench.

What do my fellow Peakers think about this turn of events? Happy about it? Think it will actually happen?

I was always much more a fan of Dale Cooper than one of “Twin Peaks”. I’d love to see/hear more of him, even in a whole different context. But is MacLachlan getting too old for the role? He’d certainly have to play it differently. He can’t play the young, earnest, eager FBI agent anymore. It’s the difference between 1970’s-era Peter Falk playing a young or middle-aged Columbo, vs. the 1990’s version, which always seemed more like a slightly pathetic old man. Hopefully MacLachlan, maybe with Frost’s help, can figure out the right approach for a middle-aged Agent Dale Cooper.

I agree, Scott. I think the most fascinating aspect would be what Cooper is doing, where he is in his life, and how he has changed.
