Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – Season three ends: What the hell?

Season three, Episodes 14-16

I think Supernatural season three’s last few episodes (especially the finale) poses more questions than they answered. I wonder if more answers would have been given if the season wasn’t cut short by the writers’ strike. I gotta say, I was a little excited by the short season; sure, I was robbed of five episodes of one of the best shows I’ve ever watched, but I’m that much closer to catching up! Although then I will actually have to wait for episodes, rather than being able to watch them at my whim … hmmm …

“Long-Distance Call”

When I saw the title of this episode,  I thought for sure that John would somehow be calling with some info on how to save Dean. So I was totally pumped when I saw Jeffrey Dean Morgan‘s name in the credits. Then I was really disappointed with the lack of JDM in the episode. No dimples to be had, but it was really easy for Dean to believe that John was calling with an exorcism that would kill a demon.

It was so sad that Dean wanted to believe so badly that his dad could save him. And why not? Dean needs a little TLC instead of giving it out all the time. It was nice to see that Sam could actually save himself; he’s definitely become less of a little girl since “Mystery Spot.”

Must-mentions:

• Sam and Dean had some great detective names this episode: Mr. Campbell and Mr. Raimie.
• Bustyasianbeauties.com turned up again, and Dean says the platinum membership is worth every penny.

“Time Is on My Side”
Immortal creepy doctor, who harvests healthy organs for replacements for his old ones, may have the answer to Dean’s predicament, thinks Sam. The boys find Bela and it doesn’t end well.

Just an observation: Sam’s hair is getting too long. He’s starting to look like Chase from House. Oh, and the ice cream scoop for Sam’s eye was just gross. Now that that’s out of the way …

Wow on the Bela storyline … somehow I expected that she’d be around a little longer. Perhaps it only felt abrupt because the season was cut short by the writers’ strike. I liked Bela and the banter she had with Dean, and I just expected more. And you’ve got to feel for her; her life with her parents was so bad that she sold her soul to a demon to be rid of them.

So Sam wants Dean to use the doc’s science to become immortal (Sammy needs his big bro), and Dean would rather go to hell than become a zombie monster. That about sums up the boys, and the storyline stayed so true to their characters.

I end with a question: Why did they bury the doc alive instead of burning him? I can’t think of a surgery that could save his pile of ashes. OK, two questions: When Sam and Dean were torturing the demon at the beginning to find out who held Dean’s contract and he says, “Your mother.” Um, I know he was being a wise-ass, but just for a second, didn’t you think there could be something more to it? We know Mary knew Azazel but none of that has been explained yet. I’m filing this one away …

OK, three questions, but this is the last one: What has Lilith done with the Colt?

“No Rest for the Wicked”
Sam and Dean find Lilith and the final showdown between Dean and Lilith ends very, very badly for Dean and Ruby.

Wow. Just wow. No, that’s not quite true. As soon as the episode finished, I turned to Keith and said, “That was really good, but I don’t think it was my favorite season finale of Supernatural.” Then I thought about it some more. In season one, it wasn’t the finale that was great, it was the beginning of season two and how it was resolved. Season two’s finale, well, that really was a great finale. I realized that “No Rest for the Wicked” was also pretty amazing, but I feel like I need the resolution of the beginning of season four for it to earn its rightful place as awesome.

I think my favorite scene was one of the more subtle ones, when Sam tried to talk to Dean about how he’s feeling, and Dean says, “If this is my last day on earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward.” So instead they sing Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive” at the top of their lungs while cruising in the Impala. A near-perfect Winchester boys moment.

I did not fail to note that Dean saw Sam as a creepy demon in one of his ‘hallucinations'; but later, Bobby says “You’re almost Hell’s bitch, so you can see Hell’s other bitches.” Foreshadowing, methinks?

Again, Supernatural, with the creepy little girl … and I wonder why Lilith has a penchant for possessing children? Oh, season three finale – So. Many. Questions … like when Ruby tells Sam his psychic stuff isn’t gone, just dormant. Yeah, that’s coming back in season four, you betcha.

I don’t really want you all to tell me, but I can’t get past this pervasive worry that Bobby is going to die. Man, I love that character and I would miss him desperately, and I can just see it fitting into the storyline at some point that Bobby sacrifices himself to save one of the boys (“family don’t end with blood, boy”). I’m scared to even look up Jim Beaver’s episodes on IMDb …

Some really great moments:

• When Dean calls Ruby “our slutty little Yoda.”
• Sam being referred to as “Anti-Christ Superstar.”
• The Trickster’s lesson from “Mystery Spot” comes back to haunt the boys: “We’re each others’ weak spots.”
• Dean’s driver’s license (or registration) has him as “Mr. Hagar.”
• It’s never a good time getting mauled by a Hellhound.

I’m really looking forward to getting caught up on season four this summer so that I can watch with you all when season five premieres. Oh yeah, and finding out if Dean’s going to spend eternity trapped in the spider webs of Hell …
