(Season 1, Episodes 13-16)
Yes, last week I (facetiously) said that I was looking for more issues that I could relate to directly, such as a student sleeping with a teacher (which happened at my high school in my senior year). Little did I know that one of the next episodes was going to feature that exact story. Like with all of the Veronica Mars stories, there was a twist… but it was still a teacher sleeping with a student.
I’m making my way through season one pretty quickly, with only a handful of episodes left. I still don’t have a good answer for the season mystery, but I maintain that there is something fishy with Celeste Kane.
“Lord of the Bling”
I found the case of the week in this episode to be a bit dull. I liked Anthony Anderson as a big record producer (though he seemed more jolly than scary), but the story of his missing daughter just didn’t catch my attention. I feel like the show has established enough interesting supporting and recurring characters that they should be spending more time with them instead of these one time characters that pop in and out in a flash.
Lynn Echolls’s funeral and Logan’s loose cannon behavior saved the episode for me, though.
“Mars vs. Mars”
Ah yes, teachers sleeping with students; it’s a story as old as school itself. I liked the little twist they put on this story, with Veronica defending the teacher and slowly realizing that he really was a creep. I liked watching Veronica and her father going after each other, as Keith was hired by the family of the student who was claiming to have had an affair with the teacher in question. It was a fun nod to Spy vs Spy, especially with the exploding dye pack in Veronica’s face.
I realize that Veronica is a curious person, and determined to find Lilly’s real killer. I’m totally down with that. I have to wonder, though, about her weaseling her way into Duncan’s doctor’s office just to find out what his mystery illness is. That seems really unethical to me, and my ethics are sketchy at best. There was no good reason for her to need that information. Shame on Veronica.
“Ruskie Business”
Again, this case of the week didn’t capture my imagination, with Veronica helping to track down the missing husband of a Russian bride. It turned out that she was really part of the mafia, looking to hunt down her supposed lover.
I was much more interested with Meg Manning and her secret admirer, along with the continued flirtation between Leo and Veronica. I thought the ’80s dance was hilarious, especially Veronica’s outfit. I think this show really excels when it focuses on the high school.
And I couldn’t forget to mention Alyson Hannigan as Logan’s half sister. There can never be enough Alyson Hannigan.
“Betty and Veronica”
This is more in line with the type of episode I enjoy. It was focused on the school, with Veronica trying to hunt down the stolen mascot. I appreciated that most of the mysteries (Weevil’s betting ring, Wallace’s blackmail) were centered around characters that we know.
The real excitement in this episode, however, came with the meeting between Veronica and her drunken slut of a mother. I’m hoping that her reason for running away, sleeping around, and drowning herself in alcohol turns out to be pretty good, because right now I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for Lianne (who doesn’t even know who Veronica’s real father is… classy). Hopefully her stint in rehab will be worth Veronica’s life savings.

You are not hooked ? Veronica Mars was a well-written with superb acting, it’s so rare in television today.
I am looking forward the movie (yes i still believe in !! yes we can !)
I’m really enjoying it. It’s a fun show, and I’m intrigued by the season long mystery… Am I hooked? No.
She wants to know Duncan’s mystery illness because he’s a suspect!
I suppose… it just still seems like she crossed a line to me. It’s not like he’s suspect number 1, and even if he were, what is the liklihood that his illness would have had anything to do, or shed any light on, the murder? I think she was just being nosy.

Yes, thank you for that. I literally laughed out loud when I saw the first scene of that episode.
Yes veronica is an interesting character because she is flawed : she is judgmental, nosy, draw conclusion too fast but in the same time she is strong,fearless,sensitive,vulnerable…actually she is complex like mostly of the supportive characters (Logan Echolls..).
I think in season 3 she will become really annoying (not always though but often) but you will see by yourself.
