Last year, I raced — absolutely raced — through the first three seasons of Weeds on DVD. It was one of those shows I couldn’t get enough of. Even though drugs are serious business, there was something so funny about suburban mom Nancy Botwin turning to the drug trade to make ends meet. Let’s face it — who among us hasn’t considered that as a viable option at one time or another? But she makes it work, and I now have a serious girl-crush on Mary-Louise Parker because of that character. But there’s some heartbreak there, too — she probably wouldn’t have gotten into it had her husband (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, professional dead guy) not died.
I’ve been watching season 4 of Weeds using the On-Demand feature of Charter, but it’s not ideal. I need to be able to watch the show on various TVs in my house, and easily stop and start the episodes. In short, I’ve been waiting for season 4 on DVD ever since I watched the final episode of season 3 and Nancy’s house go up in smoke.
Season 4 takes the show in a new direction. Nancy moves from Agrestic and small-time dealer status to new digs near the border, where she becomes a major player in a Mexican drug cartel. If, like me, you’ve been waiting impatiently to get caught up with the gang, including Elizabeth Perkins, Justin Kirk, and Kevin Nealon, that wait is finally over. Watch fast, though. Season 5 starts June 8, 2009.
