The Pushing Daisies swan song begins

pushingdaisiesOh, Pushing Daisies (or PDubs, as I like to refer to you privately where no one can make fun of me), I missed you. I missed you so very much. I missed your colors, I missed your beauteous cinematography (or is it telematography in this case?). I even missed your terribly wonderful puns (the “Rock Me Almond Date Quince” was possibly the most genius thing I have ever heard). It almost hurts me how good you are, because I know, soon, we shall be parted forever, and I shall never gaze upon you and your amazing costumes ever again.

How am I going to survive without my regularly scheduled allotment of Lee Pace making my heart go pitter-pat? How will I go on without Chuck teaching me how to dress? Where else can I turn to for Emerson Cod and his Itty Bitty? Can I continue without Vivian and Lily to make my heart break and yet grow from joy every week? And has there ever been an animal sidekick I have loved more than I love Digby (and Pigby)? Without you I fear my heart will wither into a blackened, moldy crisp, much like one of Ned’s fruits.

But no, let us make the most of our last, glorious moments together. Let us not focus on my sadness that Olive seems destined for the wonderfully monikered Randy Mann, not Alfredo the homeopathic drug dealer, as I had always hoped. Let us choose not to focus on this played-out Olive/Ned/Chuck triangle. Because he was just jealous Olive could touch her beloved, right? Of course right. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. In fact, let’s abandon this whole Olive situation and go back to her being Emerson’s partner, Itty Bitty. Because as much as I sympathize with Olive for being in love with Ned (seriously, I really, really do), sometimes I just want to shake her for her levels of delusion and denial. My sympathy is not endless, Olive! It is finite. (Like, sadly, this show.)

Instead, let’s remember what has made me love this show from the beginning — it’s whimsical wonderousness. And there was plenty of that going around this week, from Ned’s foray into being Superman to Emerson’s reluctant acceptance of Chuck as the Alive-Again Avenger to a stellar lineup of guest stars. Let’s listen on repeat to Olive’s amazing rendition of Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello.” (Eat it, Danny Gokey.) There were so many quotable lines, so many delightful moments, so many plays on the English language, and such fabulous costume work. And that is what I will remember most about you, my beloved show, not your minuscule failings.

Shh, don’t speak. I know you love me too. Let’s just hold each other until the end.
