Diary of a Six Feet Under virgin – Ruth Crushes on Dwight Schrute, Brenda returns

Six Feet Under

(Season 3, Episodes 4-7)

Well, I’ve officially fallen for Six Feet Under. I’ve been enjoying the show since I started watching it, but since I’ve gotten into season 3, I’ve become addicted. I don’t know exactly what it was that turned the knob for me, but I can’t get enough of the show now.

More guest stars have begun to pop up, most notably Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute Arthur Martin, the new apprentice at Fisher & Diaz. Seriously, though, I can’t look at Wilson in this character and not see Dwight from The Office. I don’t know if it’s a comment on Wilson’s acting, or if they are both just similarly bizarre characters.

“Nobody Sleeps”

What a great episode! The family (sans Claire) celebrated Ruth’s birthday in a wild night of food, drinking, and dancing. Meanwhile Claire and Russell went out for a night on the town with their artist professor. I really loved watching Claire and Ruth sort of come into their own in this episode. Both of them stretched their boundaries and seemed to discover things about themselves.

When it came to the end of the day, they had both found real, true moments of happiness. I really loved the end of the episode where Claire and Ruth shared a moment together, Claire wanting to go out to lunch and take a trip to the museum with her mother. After watching two seasons of Ruth struggling to connect with Claire, this was so great to see.

“The Trap”

It was only a matter of time before Brenda popped back into the picture. I think it will be interesting to see what sort of role she’ll be playing in the series moving forward, but I think it’s safe to say that she is probably going to complicate things for Nate and Lisa (as if they needed things more complicated). It was nice to see that Brenda is still in a recovery program, and hopefully has changed for the better.

This episode also featured the introduction of Arthur, Rainn Wilson’s character. Peculiar doesn’t begin to describe him, which means that he’s probably going to fit in just fine with the rest of the characters on this show. I certainly don’t foresee any problems with him living with Ruth as they bonded over the death of a mouse. “They have germs, they deserve to die.”

“Making Love Work”

Poor Nate (I say that a lot, don’t I?), he was trying to get away from everything and have some time to himself. Of course, his camping trip soon turned into a family trip, including another couple and their kid. Add to that the fact that Nate had a dream of making out with Brenda and things aren’t looking so good for he and Lisa. Of course that dream did inspire him to have some great sex with Lisa, which may have injected some much-needed passion into their marriage. Lisa reminisced how most of their passionate love-making would come after Nate was upset or got .stood up by another woman. That’s not so healthy.

There was another budding romance that came to the surface in this episode: Arthur and Ruth. They seem made for each other, even with the large age difference. I think this will be a very interesting plot point moving forward. I have no idea whether they will get together or not, but I think it would have hilarious consequences. I would love to see the rest of the family’s reaction.

“Timing and Space”

Claire and Russell are very cute together, and they seem to be a much better couple than her and Phil. The couple that I was focused on in this episode, however, was Keith and David. David dragged Keith to a brunch hosted by one of his friends in the gay men’s chorus. It seems like David and Keith just don’t have anything in common these days… except for the great sex. It’s almost as if they have become the new Nate and Brenda (with far less self destructive behavior). The real irony is that Keith was so intent on David coming out and coming to terms with his sexuality, and as he continues to become more comfortable, it seems that he and Keith grow further apart.

This episode also featured the funeral of Brenda’s father, and some fabulous moments from Margaret, Brenda’s mom, who I continue to love. She is such a nutjob; I loved watching her call out people at the funeral, including Nate. It was interesting to see Nate and Brenda really reconnect, as well as Lisa’s reaction. Clearly, she has some trust issues when it comes to Nate and Brenda, and I can’t really blame her.

I’m not sure if you can call him a guest star, as he was pretty much an unknown at this point — well before he started on The Office.

In fact I would not be surprised if his role in this series led to his role as Dwight.

I really enjoy your reviews as I am going through the series currently. I’m a disc or two ahead, but it’s great to get another person’s perspective on the series.

Wait until the finale season, I love it. I think the weakest points are in 3 and 4, but it’s still awesome to watch.

oh no i love season 3 and 4, there were the most complex and dark, but a bit depressing. Oh Nate…
