My theory is that people — especially women — love The Closer‘s Brenda Leigh Johnson because she’s ditzy, scattered and loves junk food. You know, like the rest of us out here.
I’m not saying we’re ditzy because we’re dumb. Far from it. We’re ditzy because we’re all trying to juggle 153 things every day, and so is she. Most female TV detectives are smart, organized, AND beautiful, which makes us hate them all the more. But what sets Brenda apart — aside from her ditziness — is her amazing ability to read people and force confessions out of them in her lovely Southern way. We should all have such a talent.
Season four of the TNT show is on DVD this week, and we get to learn even more about what ruffles Brenda’s frilly skirts. Mixed among the serial killers and terrorists this season are her fiance, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), his “psychic” sister (Amy Sedaris), and Brenda’s parents, all preparing for the upcoming nuptials.
Along with the full season, the set includes some nice extras, including a blooper reel (yes, making this show is super fun), guest star Jennifer Coolidge’s R-rated ad lib cafe scene, deleted scenes, and a featurette with Corey Reynolds (Sgt. Gabriel) and LAPD Det. Mike Berchem, who serves as an advisor to the show.
My only question? How does Brenda eat all that junk food and stay so thin? That’s just not right. Maybe I do hate her after all.
