Why Adam Lambert will not win American Idol

adam-lambert-01-2009-03-101

Yes … he has talent.  Yes … he can sing.  Yes … he’s easy on the eyes.  Yes … he takes command of a song and makes it his (does he ever.)  Yes … he’s got little girls and tweens screaming in the audience before, during and after every Idol performance, not to mention directly at their television sets.  Yes … he’s coiffed and tailored to a “T.”

But Adam Lambert will not win the top spot on American Idol this season.

Adam Lambert gushes too much. He’s overflowing with exuberance. Great for dramatic effect, terrific for the audience … but this is a singing competition, not an audition for the latest stage production.  He’s not trying to out-perform fifty other hopefuls for the lead spot in West Side Story; he’s making a run for the top spot on American Idol.

Adam Lambert has questionable taste in song construction. Case in point:  “Ring Of Fire.”  Ouch.  That one was painful.  I’m all for giving a song a go in an alltogether different style, one that works and makes it uniquely someone’s own.  But the Slumdog Millionaire treatment of Johnny Cash’s classic was not only over the top, it was unlistenable.  I swear Cash has risen from the grave and is slowly shambling to the Nokia Theater in search of him at this very moment.  (Stay tuned for Cash’s shocking emergence during the grand finale, folks.)

Adam Lambert is a screamer. You don’t have to put a pregnant, shrill high-note in every single song choice.  (That’s why I refer to him as Adam “Screaming Mimi” Lambert.)  It might be a trademark, but it’s annoying as all get out each and every time he does it.  We get it Adam … really, we do.

Adam Lambert is not as bankable as some might think. Sure … there are those who drift toward Clay Aiken and his androgynous ilk as well as those who even enjoy a tune or two from Marilyn Manson and his coiffed chameleonism and painted nails.  But Adam doesn’t have the overall “Idolism” The Powers That Be would like to ultimately put out there.  He’s a bit typecast … and that will work against him.  (All right, all right!  Apologies to all the Marilyn Manson fans out there!  Yeeeeesh …  you guys are wicked protective of your icons!  I didn’t mean anything by the comparison to Adam …)

Adam Lambert may be popular, but even Taylor Hicks won out over Chris Daughtry. There’s good, there’s good quirky and there’s Adam quirky.  ‘Nuff said.  (Granted, Hicks’ post-Idol debut was chode and unlistenable, but the fact of the matter is he won.)

Look: I dug Adam’s rendition of Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” just as much as the next guy or gal, but one performance does not an Idol make.

What?  You need another reason?  How ’bout my Mother In Law? She’s got maaaaaaaadd skillz at calling in votes for Danny “The Gokester” Gokey. (She has forty successive calls under her belt before the average Idol voter has committed ten.)  If’n I was you, I wouldn’t cross her.  She’ll hunt you down.  Seriously.

Why not just say the obvious? Adam is GAY and not trying to hide it. Therefore he won’t win. That’s a lot shorter, isn’t it?

May 4, 2009 at 5:27 PM

Leaving aside that I don’t care for Adam’s persona, I can’t imagine why he would want to win. Why would he want the AI folks managing him creatively? Are they going to let him do what he really *wants* to do creatively? I doubt it.

May 4, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Yeah I don’t see why he would want it either. Last year everyone thought David A would win and he lost mile a mile.

My favorite Idol is still Chris D, and he came in 3rd or 4th. I’m hoping for an Adam – Kris finale with Kris winning it.

May 4, 2009 at 9:05 PM

I AM A HUGE ADAM FAN! I UNDERSTAND THAT THE WORLD IS FILLED WITH HATERS.

I THEREFORE DEMAND THAT YOU VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE CONTESTANT TO WIN. NOT JUST ONE VOTE, BUT A LOT FOR YOUR FAVORITE TO WIN.

IF YOU DON’T DO THAT, IT MEANS YOU ARE SIMPLY A “BITTER AND JEALOUS PERSON.”

May 4, 2009 at 9:37 PM

I hope you are right. I just don’t understand why people like Adam and David A. even tried out for Idol knowing they can make it without being on there. I don’t know if it was true, but I had heard David A. from last season had a CD coming out, but then he made it on Idol and they canceled it. And as for the person in love with Adam, I think Idol needs to allow people to vote online; it would be a lot simpler, that’s why I don’t vote.

May 4, 2009 at 10:56 PM

I dunno…might have to link this over on a community site. Last count there were ’bout 8,000 Adam fans. And they are like a swarm of killer bees when it comes to protecting Adam.

May 4, 2009 at 10:58 PM

I just have two words….. “who cares?”

May 5, 2009 at 1:11 AM

Elephant in the room… Just say it.

I hope he wins!

May 5, 2009 at 8:27 AM

sandyeggo said it best. Buzz, Buzz…Sting!
Go Adam!

May 5, 2009 at 8:45 AM

Wow – OP. Hate much? Need to get that homophobia out? Want to get people voting for someone else?

I hope Adam wins, just because of people like you.

May 5, 2009 at 10:59 AM

I like Adam as well, but it was a 50 to 1 upset on #8(Mine That Bird) at the Kentucky Derby this past weekend!!

May 5, 2009 at 12:03 PM

BS. Adam WILL win American Idol. He has huge numbers of Daughtry fans and huge numbers of Hicks’ fans.Anybody that can bridge that gap is bigger than your mother-in-law.Danny is a good singer who lacks everything Adam has as far as being a performer goes. And a singer IS a performer….like it or not. A person used to be able to simply stand and sing. In the now times of concerts and live T.V. that is no longer the case.I am not saying Goeky will not be mildly successful in the music business, but he will never command the attention Adam Lambert does. And, if you go into another room and just listen to it, “Ring of Fire” was done beautifully. I had the same reaction you did initially….until I just listened. Adam has a voice and is a Rocker, and is gorgeous to look at, and has a great personality and has umpteen million fans.Sorry, Adam fans will take their chances against your mother-in-law. The comparison to bees a buzzin’ was probably right on.

May 5, 2009 at 12:14 PM

LOL…I love Adam’s voice, high notes, purity, and tone. If it were truly a singing contest, he would win hands down. The amount of people that refer to his singing as screaming are much less than the ones that enjoy the fact there is a singer that can do such amazing things with his voice.

Gushes? Yes, he is bubbly, bright, courageous, happy and isn’t afraid to show it. In these depressing economical times, he brightens my day and that hasn’t been an easy thing to do lately.

I loved Ring Of Fire, as I have all his other performances. I love watching him make these songs current and new and something I would love to hear on the radio. I absolutely can’t wait to buy his albums and I haven’t been tempted to buy an album in years. But I will be first in line to buy his.

What some people like to hear in their music is much different than what other people like to hear. That is why there are so many flavors. :) Instead of criticizing someone else’s favorite contestant, maybe you would be better served to “gush” about your favorite.

All the contestants are very good and time will tell who will be the more famous and best selling artist after AI. I think there are many people, such as yourself, who may be very surprised at what happens in the future.

May 5, 2009 at 12:46 PM

Adam doesn’t need to win American Idol to be successful.
He is already a star.

Danny Gokey, however, will need all the help he can get.
He can have the title, but it won’t mean sh!t. (see Taylor Hicks)

May 5, 2009 at 1:08 PM

Adam is “type cast”? Are we watching the same show? Adam has shown only a small fraction of his versatility and it’s STILL more than any other contestant that stage. I think June would have loved Adams rendition of her song (SHE wrote it ya know) because it fully expressed that desire, the passion, the almost out of control feeling of letting go and giving yourself to another person. I can’t see that 40 years ago a country song could have done true justice to her lyrics and emotions…but in 2009, Adam can.

He outsells everyone on iTunes by a mile, he’s the number 2 google search (right behind swine flu), people who can’t stand him still can’t keep themselves from talking, blogging, writing about him. Why? Because people want to know more about this amazingly talented, considerate, self aware, centered, respectful young man who stirs many different emotions all at once. Clearly it’s bringing people to you by just mentioning his name so I don’t see how you can say he isn’t highly marketable. So stop hating and just accept people as they are and enjoy what they have to bring to the world.

I don’t have a crystal ball, don’t know if he will win but certainly believe he can. But you’re right, in the end, it won’t matter because baby he’s a star already, like it or not.

May 5, 2009 at 1:20 PM

Adam won’t win because America in general won’t vote for a drag queen. This is American Idol, not American Gay Idol.
whatever chance he had, went out the window with the pics and videos which got posted to the net. Even the most Adam adoring parents will switch their votes when their kids come running with print outs shouting ,” Hey, look what showed up on the net!”

May 5, 2009 at 1:22 PM

I believe that you mean “Kodak” theatre. More pertinently I would be intrigued to discover your means of communicating empathically with the dead? Following the bizarrely vitriolic response to Adam’s Ring of Fire, it was stated by an acquaintance of the late Johnny Cash that he was a brilliant, open-minded man who valued new interpretations of music. As such, whilst said acquaintance would never presume to know for a fact what Johnny would have thought (unlike you), he deemed it fairly likely that he would have respected and probably enjoyed the version.

As regards the “gushing”, surely enthusiasm is a sound commodity to have? Or perhaps you’re being euphemistic?

Finally, given the accolades he has received from well-known musicians, voice-coaches et al, there is little point in addressing the “screaming” issue any further.

May 5, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Hmmm…are you 12?
I guess you don’t remember Johnny Cash doing a cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt” – I think he’d totally approve of Adam’s ROF cover…or perhaps you’re too musically stunted to imagine something that.

You also don’t remember Axl, Steve Perry, Halford, Geoff Tate, or any of the other ‘screamers’ from some of the best bands out there?

Oh, well, I guess there’s no accounting for poor musical taste such as yours.

Sweetheart, just a simple google search can show you that Adam already has international appeal whereas poor Danny will only be singing at MegaChurch potlucks after his Idol contracts run out.

May 5, 2009 at 5:08 PM

Adam is bold, self-confident, and creative. If that intimidates you into trying to bash him, we will just consider the source. Those that try to tear others down really just feel bad about themselves. So, I feel sorry for you. Open your eyes and see that different is a good thing. If all artists were the same, what would make them an artist? I appreciate Adam’s ability to bring a unique style to the boring state of music today.

May 5, 2009 at 5:15 PM

He has a 1 in 4 shot of winning, they all do. Lambert is a decent enough musician and great showman. He’s not the second coming (of Elvis or any other King) though, despite what rabid fantards online with nothing better to do with their time gush. A year from now he’ll be the next Kelly Clarkson, a few good hits, a decent bank portfolio, and a place in the halls of rock mediocrity.

None of this year’s contestants have the staying power needed to be a real King of the charts. This is typical of Idol winners and loser. With the possible exception of Kerry Underwood and even less likely David Cook, Idol contestants are all doomed to the halls of music mediocrity.

May 5, 2009 at 5:18 PM

No one’s going to take you seriously with a ridiculously-written article like that. Attempt to sound objective and professional and refrain from mentioning your crazy Mother in Law before you flaunt your homophobic ideas around, PLEASE.

Don’t go around telling us why Adam won’t win Idol. He will win; even if he isn’t the winner, he’s won. Adam Lambert is the star of this season. He’s gotten the recognition he needs to shoot into superstardom. So, to reiterate, don’t go around telling us Adam won’t win Idol, because I can confidently say you don’t know SHIT about the competition.

May 5, 2009 at 5:22 PM

Followed the link from TVWOP Laughing at the responses, don’t let them get you down- they are typical mushmind from the Adam Lambert “fan club” there. Where do they find morons who don’t know the difference between an editorial and an article? An “objective” op-ed? LOL! That’s priceless!

May 5, 2009 at 7:54 PM

LMAO!! You’ve got quite a following here…very intelligent and articulate to boot!! :D

May 6, 2009 at 12:05 AM

Adam Lambert, is a talenterd person that is awesome to watch. He has Elvis Presley eyes, and a voice to be reckoned with. I like the fact, that he has such humility. AS a successful entertainer, I hope he stays true to himself and he does’nt let the harsh realities of this industry change him for the worse.I only wish the best for all of the contestants, and I commend them for having the courage to go after their dreams.

May 6, 2009 at 12:19 AM

Adam’s definately got a future in the music biz and it may be a blessing in disguise if he loses Idol to launch off to a record deal better suited to his style. Although he’s not my cup of tea, he certainly has stage presence, make that HUGE stage presence!

May 6, 2009 at 12:23 AM

I meant to say, that Adam Lambert is a talented person not a
“talenterd” person.

May 9, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Besides all that. I don’t think there is that many clammering for an Idol that looks like an action figure. I keep waiting for lightning bolts shooting out of his eyeballs.

May 13, 2009 at 4:36 PM

You just nailed him with the name Adam “Screaming Mimi” Lamber … his is an screeming weirdo

May 13, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Yeah… he is an screaming weirdo

June 18, 2009 at 9:29 PM

ADAM did not need to win American Idol, he won the World.

May 13, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Adam is a great talent, sexy, original, brilliant, and so much more.

The only way he could lose is if the fans of the two wedding singers vote for the other one after one is eliminated. They probably will because those two are so much alike.

It might be hard for the Super Star to overcome the double-whammy.

But, if everyone who assumes Adam will win actually votes for him, he will win, as he should.

June 18, 2009 at 9:19 PM

I love ADAM and I can not wait to buy his new CD. I just do not understand why people are talking about him screaming. I come from a Family Educated in Music..B.S. Degree, all areas K-12, including Voice Training, Theory and all intrumental. he is not screaming, he is singing with a controlled voice above a third octave and higher. Perhaps all of those people have just never seen or heard anyone like him. American Idol was Lucky to have ADAM.

May 14, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Of course people like you want what you call “average/normal” people to win (Danny Gokey and Taylor Hicks). You guys don’t like uniqueness or creativity. I get it. Sigh, the boring world we live in….

May 20, 2009 at 10:36 PM

Adam Lambert did not win because he is so good that I’m sure he will have many many contracts to choose from and labels that want to sign him. If he had won American Idol he has to take the contract that he wins which is small bean compared to what he could get….he’s a new talent…fresh love him!!

May 22, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Adam did not win yes mostly because he is GAY, let me tell everyone something if you haven’t noticed it, HINT HINT American Idol meaning set a perfect example for American Being gay is not 1 of those good examples, You all should be against gayness , if everyone was gay you wouldn’t be born!
Think about it would u like to have a gay president?

HELL NO

Everyone will say God damn American have a gay president A Fag is running our country!

Okay then if you all don’ still don’t agree with me and if you are NORMAL would u be happy if your kid, your dad is gay or straight?

Ask yourself that then you will come to a conclusion what American Idol Means!

Don’t try to be no super hero like Obama too when you answer this question.

June 18, 2009 at 9:22 PM

I hope to you do not have children.

June 18, 2009 at 9:23 PM

I hope you do not have children.

May 23, 2009 at 1:33 PM

Okay everyone, I want you all to take a moment to close your eyes, and imagine your father and your mother broke up and it was your father who broke up with your mother…. and later on you found out because he did what he did because he was cheating on her with another Guy….. how would you feel?

Can you open up to your friends and relatives of the wrong doing?

You as an American want people to go thru this? It really is an embarrassment.

So PLEASE don’t be a hypocrite and reach thru your soul and put you self in your situation instead of the situation of that fantasy world that you have.

Religions huh? okay lets talk about it God made Adam and Eve, Not Adam and Steve…..

If God think eating an apple from a tree is bad O Boy will he be pissed when he see people trying make Eve to Steve.!

Do Not try to be a super hero and really Visualize of what i am trying to say…

Don’t Hate this thread because what i state or reasonable facts and i think America with over 80 million votes should have a normal example have a good America’s Idol

In my mind i thought Adam Lambert was going win
after the annoucement i am glad he didn’t win.
