Oh, television! You thought you could make a difference, once upon a time. I mean, other than satisfying that niche of viewers who need to see a reality show starring Lorenzo Lamas. You had heart, you had meaning. You were — dare I say it — altruistic. So, when you wanted to address the topic of pollution in America you didn’t just have Meredith Viera in a green jacket or recycle one of your tired show plots. You broadcast a Public Service Announcement that burned a permanent image into viewers minds that they would recall many years later.
Case in point, the legendary Crying Indian spot. Starring actor Iron Eyes Cody the early 1970s PSA (part of the Keep America Beautiful campaign) depicted an America full of people who didn’t give a damn about their environment (um, sort of like today). The climatic moment came when, after having trash thrown at his feet by a speeding driver, Cody turned to the camera with a single tear running down his cheek.
So, let’s take a moment to remember Cody, William Conrad (the PSA announcer), the needlessly wasted bag of fast food, and the dude who will always be known as the guy who made Iron Eyes cry. I’m sure he cringes everytime someone mentions it at a party.
They make fun of it on “BULLSHIT!!!”, which you can find free online through Google, everyone should watch it because Earth Day is bullshit.
Also the awesome Simpsons’ episode where the “Indian” cried at the end! haha
