In this week’s episode of Lost, there was a ton of mythology explored. We were treated to some of Danielle Rousseau’s backstory and though it was brief, it was great! We learned some new things about the smoke monster, and in true Lost fashion, even more questions were raised. As if that wasn’t enough, we also got another glimpse of Jacob, or at the very least Christian Shephard acting as his envoy. I’m still trying to wrap my head around some of these things, but I’ve got some thoughts…
Let’s start with Rousseau. At the end of the last episode we saw her and her crew drag Jin out of the ocean, so it wasn’t a huge surprise this week to see more of the French scientist and her crew. Curious that Rousseau didn’t really recognize Jin when they met in previous seasons, though. I would think that she would remember the strange guy who popped up when she landed on the island and then disappeared suddenly. Perhaps she was more mentally damaged than we were led to believe.
This week, there were some fascinating revelations, particularly related to the smoke monster. The smoke monster appeared to the crew in the jungle, with Jin tagging along, dragging off one of Rousseau’s men, as we saw happen to Locke in the first season. More was revealed this time around though. The monster dragged it’s target into a strange crack in some ruins, which were covered with hieroglyphs. I wonder if this was the “temple” that we had heard referred to several times by the Others. After being dragged into the darkness, the monster’s victim wasn’t killed, but was left alone. Rousseau’s team went after him and they came back with some sort of “sickness.”
Danielle had always claimed that her crew got sick and she was forced to kill them, but I was always skeptical. I mean, the woman was not the most mentally stable individual and it certainly seemed possible that she could have just made it up, or misremembered. As we saw this week, though, the monster (I presume) somehow affected Rousseau’s crew. Something was making her husband point a gun at her. The exact nature, cause, and purpose of this sickness is unclear, but I, for one am intrigued. Is the monster possessing people? Is it just projecting the image of Rousseau’s crew, like it did with Ecko’s brother? Perhaps those were not Danielle’s colleagues at all.
As if this weren’t enough, John had an encounter underground with Christian Shephard. The exact nature of Christian’s recent appearances are still up in the air. Some believe that Christian is Jacob, himself, as he has appeared several times in Jacob’s cabin. Personally, I think that Jacob is using Christian’s body to send messages to Locke and others. I’m not even convinced that Jacob is a person at all. Whether he’s theĀ personification of the island, or some sort of spirit, I think he uses the dead on the island as his messengers. This is Lost, however, so I have no idea if I’m correct or not. In any case, I have to believe that Christian is just a vision, as he tells John that he can’t help him up to his feet.
Do you have any thoughts on Danielle, the monster, or the nature of Jacob? Let’s discuss.
“Curious that Rousseau didnāt really recognize Jin when they met in previous seasons, though.”
I don’t think that’s how time travel works in this show. Just like Desmond, when Daniel showed up the memory didn’t show up in his head until “present time”.

Desmond is the exception to the rule. As I recall, Daniel told Desmond that he was special, that he could be affected by things that change in the past. Otherwise, everything else is set. Daniel told Sawyer that Desmond wouldn’t answer his knocks because it didn’t happen. He said they couldn’t change the past (except with Desmond). This is also why Charlotte remembered being visited by Daniel when she was growing up on the island.
That’s an interesting theory about the smoke monster, that it was projecting the image of Rousseau’s crew. But if it wasn’t really them, would she have been able to kill them? I don’t remember if Eko interacted with his brother or if he just saw him, can anyone else recall?
The only problem with your Jacob/Christian theory is that the final thing he told Locke was to “say hello to my son.” This means that some part of this entity IS Christian…or Jacob has a son out there that hasn’t been revealed….wait a minute.
I’m getting a nosebleed!
If Charlotte remembered Daniel, shouldn’t Danielle have remembered Jin as well?
Perhaps the difference between the two visits is that Daniel will make the visit while the wheel is set back on its axis, but I’m probably way off, this is Lost after all!
Ia there a possibility that Jacob is actually the island?
