“Braxton Hicks.” – pregnant Gretchen, explaining her pains.
“Is that your baby’s name?” – Kyle
A funny quote, to be sure, but that was the first of many holes in this week’s episode of Kyle XY. Kyle — the walking encyclopedia, who can spout off labor and birthing facts throughout the episode — didn’t know what Braxton Hicks contractions were. Yes, there is that innocent side to Kyle, who doesn’t know certain life things, but I think he would have known a medical fact.
I will admit, I enjoyed this episode, more and more as it progressed. The family dynamics were lovely and well-written, but that doesn’t change the fact that there were still more holes in “Life Support.”
Why didn’t Kyle use his healing mojo on Nicole as soon as he knew she was hurt, back at the car? Finally, Kyle decides to try to heal Nicole at the hospital, but it doesn’t work. Convenient. If Kyle can cure Andy’s cancer and take away Declan’s ankle pain, then surely he should be able to heal Nicole. He’s so much more powerful now than he was then.
Back to the convenience — it’s much more convenient for the writers to be able to give Latnok some leverage with Kyle rather than stay true to the characters they’ve created. So then is that a hole, that Jessi and Kyle didn’t try to combine their powers to try to heal Nicole together? It would have given the writers another chance to throw Jessi and Kyle together, which I would have thought they’d jump on. Are the writers just trying to surprise us?
Another hole: When Andy showed up to support Josh, it made me wonder why Kyle didn’t call Amanda. Would she have come through and been there for him? I know Kyle was very busy, delivering a baby and trying to save Nicole’s life and all, but I would have thought Amanda might have been a fleeting thought during a time of crisis.
Granted, I’m really nitpicking, because most of the episode was pretty well done. I think when an episode is well done, though, that it makes the holes stand out a bit more.
What do you think? Did the holes in “Life Support” bug you, too?
As with all things Kyle XY for me, these S2 and S3 episodes pale in comparison to the fun and mystery of S1. The show has never really worked for me past S1, and last night seemed like a series of desperate attempts by the writers to manufacture drama.
But I still watch, and will watch until S3.10 closes the curatin.
I already gave up. I watched the show for the super hero mystery mixed with a somewhat real world family. Now I get a common soap opera with a little super natural stuff throw in. Oh dear… the show has become “Passions”!
I don’t thinking you’re nitpicking at all, and thought the episode was subpar because of the weak writing and plot contrivances. Cool Juno chick wouldn’t have annoyed me at all if the other characters hadn’t been so stupid all around her.
I especially liked Cassidy’s “I don’t know why you’re so determined to see us as evil. Now just stand there and look forlorn as I hold your adoptive mother’s life hostage with a magic potion I stole from your clone daddy (which should really belong to you), when I could snap my fingers and have it here within 20 minutes. Join us or she dies!!! I’m not just going to give it to you as a sign of good faith, because I’m not evil. Why can’t you see that?”
Oh, forgot to complain, they brought Nicholas Lea back for… what, 30 seconds? Foss was the best part of the show.
There may have been a few “holes” as you call them but no more than the ones in your statement. First off, Andi’s cancer was of the blood. Kyle manipulated the blood cells to cure the cancer. Nicole had severe traumatic injuries. Not so easy to fix I would think. Second, Kyle never tried to heal Declan’s ankle, Jessi did, and it didn’t work. As for Kyle calling Amanda, remember the flashback to the conversation with Foss on the back porch? He said Kyle had already compromised too many people by telling them the truth so he shouldn’t tell Amanda the truth. Kyle is still trying to protect Amanda by keeping his distance from her. Which frustrates the heck out of a Kyle and Amanda fan like me.
All in all, an excellent episode that got back to the roots of why people loved this show.

Correct me if I’m wrong but Andy doesn’t know anything about Kyle’s powers right?
Didn’t she find odd that he came out of the ICU section of the hospital wearing a doctor’s badge and coat?
I’d guess she would at least look at him with a weird face or something.
I can’t remember any scene of Josh explicitly discussing Kyle’s powers with Andi, but remember, Kyle cured Andi and she knows he did, so …. I think the audience is supposed to assume Andi knows what’s up with Kyle and Jessi
DOES Andi know that Kyle healed her? She knows he gave her a hug when she needed one, and she knows that her next cancer test came back clear, but did she connect Kyle to the cancer cure?
I too thought it was odd that Andi wouldn’t even look confused about Kyle being dressed like a doctor, but maybe they told her he did that in order to check in on Nicole? I hate loose ends.
