Alright, I’m starting to get a little antsy with all of these stand alone episodes of Supernatural, but I’m trying to be okay with it. I have faith there’s going to be a big payoff when we finally get around to it. I just think it would have been alright to have all these episodes interspersed throughout the story arc, too. That way we wouldn’t all be going nutso over the fact that all the seals are being broken, and we’re not seeing any of it. Although it is doing a good job of adding to the tension of the show.
This episode was a little disappointing for a couple of reasons. First of all, least importantly, there wasn’t a whole lot of funny going on. A few pop culture references here and there, Dean’s quip about strippers and Sam c-blocking him with the hot doctor, but nothing made me laugh out loud. More importantly, “Sex and Violence” had a real chance at bringing this whole Sam/Dean impending conflict to a head, but then they backtracked. Things ended up exactly as they have been for quite some time now, with Sam and Dean tip-toeing around each other and trying to ignore the fact that Sam is lying to Dean about Ruby, and is probably going to continue to do so.
Why must they torture us like this? At the end, Sam wanted to make sure Dean knew he said those things because of the siren, but that’s just not true. No, they probably wouldn’t get to the point of killing each other, but those things that they said to each other, they meant it. Dean hates that Sam has an affinity for demons, and the simple fact that Sam is constantly lying about Ruby. Sam resents Dean for pushing aside what’s going on with Lilith and throwing himself a pity party about what he did in hell. Yet once again, as soon as the spell of the siren is broken, they’re acting like a couple of drunken idiots who woke up in bed together the next morning, pretending it never happened.

that doctor was hott! i was sure, just like everyone else, that she was the siren. i guess she just really is a free spirit… i’d like to meet her. lol
oh yeah, i agree, get back to the story supernatural!
Uh, since when are sirens shapeshifters, and worse yet, guys? Way to totally bastardize and botch the source material. LAME.

That’s if you take the last two lines at face value, which I’m pretty sure the viewer isn’t intended to. Of course they’re not going to talk about it, because talking about it would require each of them to admit that he really *meant* the things he said, and I don’t think either of them wants to admit that to himself. Also, Dean and Sam have never done *dialogue* about serious issues well–one talks and the other listens, or they talk at cross purposes, each too wrapped up in his own viewpoint to consider the other’s. I know it’s not as satisfying to the viewer, but it’s really consistent with the characters as they’ve evolved over the past four years.
I’m sure you’ll be happy with the last three episodes of the season.
I’ve always enjoyed the standalone episodes, and Supernatural has never been a show that is consistently devoted to the “lore” or the show, so I don’t think there is a disconnect.
I was shocked when Thunder Kiss ’65 started playing, as well as the references to other late 80s early 90s bands…its really the first time they’ve had that type of music. As it was one of my favorite songs, I had a ball.
And, I thought it was funny that Dean’s siren was a dude. I enjoyed the funny last night.

How could I have forgotten the reference to Cherry Pie? You’re right, that was a good one! The first thing that struck me though, and I also forgot, was that all the siren’s female characters were named after Disney princesses. Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Aurora.
I also loved that Dean’s siren was a dude, it suits him well. I had a hunch as soon as they started talking Zeppelin, then I got all confused when they threw us the red herring…
This was a good episode, don’t get me wrong, I just had to rant about the stupid underlying tension.
I completely missed the Disney references…of course, I’m not a parent or a cartoon afficianado. Wish I hadn’t deleted it already. Phooey.
To me, the angel and other stories are only side issues to the real focus, which is the disconnect between the brothers and their fragile relationship. Damned good relationship tension for a show about the supernatural, don’t you think? ;-)
SUPERNATURAL isn’t a comedy, and sometimes its comedic elements are few and far between in certain episodes. S&V was one of those that leaned more toward the tragic than funny. Sam and Dean have been heading toward this terrible place for a long time now. I have watched, miserably, as these loving brothers have skidded down, and it’s breaking my heart. I have no idea how Kripke is going to do it, but despite Evil (Lilith, YED, Lucifer), Those on the Fence (Ruby), and the Good (Uriel, Anna, Castiel), Sam and Dean will come out on top of this madness. I believe that ultimately, their bond, though stretched to its limit, will survive everything they are being put through and they will save this crappy world and all the people in it.
My only fear is, will they both be sacrificed in order to accomplish this?
I hope so, because as far as I’m concerned, the worst tragedy would be if Sam and/or Dean had to die in the process.
