Aside from all of the other incredible awesomeness that was last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, we finally got some answers as to why Denny’s been hanging around. “I’m here for you, Izzie Stevens.” Yeah, I was getting kind of sick of hearing that, even though it was cute when Izzie first started seeing dead Denny.
So why was Izzie still seeing Denny after she “broke up” with him? Handsome, quirky, dead Denny is now the angel of death for Izzie, or so it seems. Really? The angel of death? I’ve got a few theories as to how this one could play out….
Shonda Rhimes assured us in an interview back in November with Ausiello that Izzie does not have a brain tumor, as some rumors were saying. In fact, here are Rhimes’s exact words:
“I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we’ve ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can’t wait for our viewers to see where we’re taking it. But what it won’t involve is Izzie having a brain tumor.”
OK, this does not preclude another potentially fatal illness for Izzie, I get that. And Denny’s prolonged presence can even be explained if this is the way they are going. Denny said something in “Stairway to Heaven” that led me to believe he thought he could come and take her with him, or that he thought it was a blessing that he could come be with her again, or something to that effect (damn, I want that quote but it’s already off my DVR — anyone?). But as time went on, he realized that she needed to live and he was being selfish, so he tried harder to give her the hints as to why he was sent to her.
I’ve previously posed the theory that perhaps Izzie is just nuts and that’s why she can see Denny, and they can put her in a pink padded cell indefinitely, if she wants out of her contract, that is. Then, she can always come back to Grey’s when her movie career bottoms out.
Now, though, I believe there is something more going on here. What remains to be seen is whether or not Izzie can save herself from whatever ails her, be it a potentially fatal illness or insanity. And I think that will all come down to whether or not she intends on remaining a cast member of Grey’s Anatomy.
So here’s another little tidbit to add to the works. If we believe this spoiler that states that Izzie doesn’t have a brain tumor, but another brain condition (um, yeah, that’s lame of you, Shonda, but whatever) and that it has nothing to do with Katherine Heigl departing Grey’s Anatomy, then perhaps we have our answer. Did Rhimes really just want to give Heigl an Emmy-worthy storyline? Even when ABC seems to hate the storyline so much?
Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to see how Izzie’s possible brain condition plays out and whether or not Heigl remains on Grey’s.
Take our poll, won’t you, and chose all that apply:
I’m over it. I really don’t care one way or the other, as long as Denny is no longer a part of things. Go Alex and Izzie!
I honestly think the writers, no matter what they say, are giving Heigl a yank. She claimed she wasn’t being given worthy enough storylines, so they pulled out the most convoluted, cringe-worthy storyline that they could, while giving her lots of emoting to do so she could be “worthy” of the Emmy nomination that WON’T happen.
plus, hasn’t Shonda indicated that she really, really likes Jeffery Dean Morgan as an actor?

Now that’s quite a theory. I buy it; I’d totally play with Heigl’s ego over the Emmy-whine fiasco of last season! :-)
Denny says “I loved you so much that when I got to come back for you I thought you were my heaven, but maybe, maybe I’m your hell.”

AH! That’s it! Thank you for posting that. Do you see what I mean, about how Denny at first thought he could just hang out with her, but then realized that he had a job to do?
Well I’m sorry they made Denny into this stalker ghost that everyone hates and everyone wants gone. He used to be the perfect fiancee that left and died and we were all heartbroken! why did they do this to him? no everyone hates him. I think he’s just a marketing tool and an opportunity to promote Izzie+Alex for the first time as a nice, good, couple that love and support each other through thick and thin, no onw even remembers what an a.s.s Alex used to be and how he treated Izzie like a doormat. Denny has been Alex’s opportunity to become the ‘perfect boyfriend’ showing that he supports Izzie no matter how nuts she is, and at the same time it’s given Izzie/KH more material for an Emmy, while Ellen Pompeo is completely ignored for her, let me say supreme, work as an actress and for making the show totally work with her as Meredith Grey. Ditto.
After watching this episode, I can’t help but wonder if Izzyie’s dead. Izzie is the one who won’t go away and Denny is there to help her move to the next plane. It doesn’t explain how Alex can still see her, blah blah blah…Ok, late night musings need to stop. ;)
