Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – I finished season one!

supernatural-devils-trap(Season one, Episodes 18-22)

Ah, thank you to all the … ahem … enthusiastic Supernatural fans who have been spurring me on, following my Diary of a Supernatural Virgin, waiting anxiously for me to finish season one. It’s happened, and I’m left with mixed feelings.

I loved being able to plow through season one so quickly, and as the episodes passed, my love for Supernatural grew, in part because I got to watch the evolution in such a short amount of time. There’s nothing I’d change about the direction this show has taken. My mixed feelings come in because, now that new programming has finally hit the airwaves after the winter hiatus, I know season two will go much more slowly for me! And it’s going to be really hard not to tune in to season four when it starts up again, but I will do my best to stay away because I really do want to watch Supernatural in order.

So let’s get to it….

“Something Wicked”

My first thought with this episode was, oh man, please don’t go there with a kid. I like how SN can be dark, but I didn’t want to think that was a place they’d go. They didn’t, and I was relieved.

But it was a good monster-of-the-week, because now we know why Dean is such a rule follower, and again, SN so naturally reveals things about the boys through the weekly storylines. Dean is such a sensitive brother underneath all that gruff stuff, and he just wants Sam’s innocence back for him. Sweet.

OK, this one’s for you Buffy fans: the energy being released from the dying Shriga reminded me of a demon on Buffy … maybe someone can fill this blank in for me, but I remember the souls escaping from a dead demon in a similar fashion. Or am I thinking of the voices escaping from the jars in “Hush?” I still think there was another, more similar … or was it on Angel?

“Provenance”

Here we go with the kid again, this time as the evildoer, so I wasn’t quite as worried about the dark places that SN may go.

Dean was so funny and obvious, trying to thrust Sam and Sarah together. It was like watching an episode of Saved by the Bell, and I mean that in only the best way. Dean was funny in general, not at first shooting the display case for the doll and trying instead to bash it with the butt of the gun. I really enjoyed this one, and it was a nice relief after the more serious Shriga, and as I quickly found out, before the dark “Dead Man’s Blood.”

I liked the character of Sarah so much that I even checked to see if she’d be recurring: nope. I could totally picture her riding along with the demon-hunting boys and being right in the thick of it with them.

“Dead Man’s Blood”

Since this one was about vampires, I was curious to see how Buffy‘s influence would affect this episode. For just a one-off episode, they came up with a lot of their own original lore — like growing a second set of teeth, needing to behead the vamps to kill them — while still respecting the history of vamps.

This episode was about the three Winchesters and how they interact, though. Sam fights with John and they realize they are more alike than they thought. Dean speaks up to John for the first time, asking John why he wants the boys out of the fight. They finally find a gun that could kill the demon — or anything, for that matter — that killed their mom and Jess, and John wants to do it all by himself.

“Salvation”

So it’s pretty clear that Meg is probably possessed now. So I guess I probably don’t hate her, just the demon inside (is that too INXS?).

I think it did the Winchester boys good to save that family from the same demon that tore theirs apart, even though it got away. As if we didn’t know it before, this all has something to do with Sam’s abilities, as they intimate that baby Rosie could read minds.

Dean mouths off to John again, and he submits and lets the boys try to kill the demon while John goes to appease Demon Meg with the fake gun. It seems as though the three Winchesters are finally working together as a team of equals.

I have to say, it was a bit hard to watch this episode because I do know a bit of a spoiler — pretty much the whole world does — that Jeffrey Dean Morgan ends up playing a dead guy on Supernatural (and subsequently every show he’s been on since), so I just keep waiting for it. His capture was pretty tense for me!

I know I’ve been on the lookout for Dean’s dark side all season, but it really comes out again when he gets angry with Dean and says he’s willing to sacrifice himself to kill the demon and get revenge.

“Devil’s Trap”

I liked Bobby Singer right away (I know some of you die-hard fans rave about this character), with his two flasks — one of holy water, one of whiskey. Classic demon hunter stuff. I have a feeling this is not your average hick, after the elaborate trap they set for Demon Meg (who’s been possessed a year, we find out). I have to say, salt’s value in the world has really gone up for me since watching SN: it’s not just for French fries and aromatherapy baths anymore….

Dean is the strong one in this family, which is most surprising considering the way he comes off outwardly. Sam is just like John, which they’ve been hinting at for  a couple of episodes — they are both too willing to sacrifice themselves for the demon; they are selfish. Dean, on the other hand, would do anything for Sam and John; even let the demon get away to save the family. He didn’t even flinch killing the humans. Dean watches out for the family, Sam and John get obsessed.

I think it was telling that Sam took Dean’s side — trusted him — when Dean knew that John was possessed. The brothers are the ones that are going to have to stick together, so I’m glad Sam made that choice.

Two last little notes: I could tell Dean had a second fake gun, and JDM plays one awesome demon.

Keith tells me that I’m not really a virgin because I knew about the car crash, but man, I don’t live in a bubble! It’s not like I went looking for that information, and I wasn’t even considering watching the show when that little tidbit crossed my radar. but I don’t know how it all turns out, so don’t tell  me!

I’m curious, when did you notice this: “I could tell Dean had a second fake gun”? I’m glad you’re enjoying the show so much!

When they were at the trunk and Dean was pretending to leave the gun in the car, I knew that was a fake and that he had the real one, just b/c of the look on Dean’s face and the fact that he didn’t put up a stink about it. We already knew he’d do anything for his family, and he wanted to be prepared to kill whatever he needed to kill to save them if need be.

Hmmm… I’ll have to watch that scene again. I just assumed he pretended to drop the gun in the trunk, but really just pocketed it. Oh well, any excuse to watch the show again ;)

but I don’t know how it all turns out, so don’t tell me!

I really hope no one does, because 2.01 is the best resolution of a season-ending cliffhanger that I’ve ever seen on television. I already liked both the character of Dean and Jensen Ackles going into the episode, and my love for both of them had grown exponentially by the time the credits rolled.

Hi,

My sister just pointed out this site to me and I’ve really enjoyed reading over your accounts of catching up with the show.

My sister basically sat me down and forced me to watch Supernatural a year ago (I’d refused to watch it on the basis that a show about ‘two pretty boys driving around the country looking for ghosts’ couldn’t possibly be up to much – ITV advertised it BADLY!). Anyhoo, reading your account of watching the first season was so similar to my own thoughts! Home was the turning point for me though, the bit when Dean calls his dad really hit me – a show that has a tough hero-guy who they’re willing to let you see cry? I was hooked from that point on.

I’m very much looking forward to reading your accounts of season 2 – I knew about John aswell but it didn’t ruin anything for me at all. Season 2 really does up the ante a lot and if you liked the brotherly interaction on the first season, you’ll LOVE what’s coming up!

I’m going to echo what someone else said – I didn’t realise that was a fake gun at all! I just thought he got it out later while Sam wasn’t looking… I suppose I’ll just have to watch again, the hardship!

Actually, you’ve even made me want to watch Bugs again, and I can’t believe I just said that… :o)

The Buffy demon you might be thinking of was the Der Kindestod demon from Season 2’s “Killed By Death.” The demon would suck the life out of children in the hospital. Also possible would be the Inca Mummy Girl from Season 2’s episode of the same name. She literally sucked the life out of people (men) to retain her own life.

Awwww, I specifically scrolled back after finding your posts to find out how you reacted to this scene. I have seen some cliff hangers in my day, but this had me cursing a blue streak… Since I just found this show Christmas 2007, I only had to wait about 6 minutes for the next episode to buffer up enough for me to view it… I was still incensed because this stupid show had me up all night. I planned on watching 5 or 6 episodes and having the 2.5 seasons completed by January… instead I stayed up all night, screamed so loud at the finale that I hurt my throat (it was 10am by then and I was ready to go to bed…. Now, I couldn’t I had to watch more! So, I cursed the creator and the writer, I worried about the boys and their Dad… I didn’t know if this was the kind of show that would show different hunter’s tale each season (they sure looked dead to me)… Holy crap is all I can say. Then, while I was waiting for the download and saw the title of the Season #2 opener…. I was just dying. The writers are cruel people (as you will soon see). Be afraid of finales… be very afraid :-)
