Diary of a Supernatural Virgin – Dark, poignant, funny, and I still hate Meg

supernatural-shadow

(Season one, Episodes 13-17)

Only five more episodes until the first season ends? Say it isn’t so! Supernatural is some of the best fun on TV; I’m so glad I decided to give this series a chance. Some huge things happened in these five episodes I recently watched. They are slowly moving us toward the big finale; though I don’t know what that’s going to be yet, I feel like it must have something to do with Meg (yuck) and the evil she works for.

“Route 666″

This was not my favorite episode (boring!), and Dean and Cassie had zero chemistry. Their sex scene was just awkward … ewwwwww. And honestly, I know when Supernatural does this it is just tongue-in-cheek, making fun of the typical horror flick, but Cassie, when a truck is threatening to run into your house and mow you down, just go upstairs. The truck can’t run you over on the second floor.

Dean revealed himself to Cassie, which is important and shows us a new side to Dean. I wonder how it will play out in later episodes….

I noticed the soundtrack has mellowed and grown just like the boys — not just heavy metal, but classic rock too. I’m loving it even more, and it is so telling of the writer’s / producer’s talent when they make the soundtrack reflect the growth of the characters.

“Nightmare”

Huge episode (though not the hugest in this block of five I watched), although I don’t know what it all means yet.

  • Sam has more premonition dreams, which morph into waking visions.
  • Sam can now move furniture with his mind.
  • Max has abilities — like Sam’s on steroids — and they started around the same time Sam’s did, six to seven months ago.
  • Max’s mom dies in a fire on their ceiling in his nursery, just like Sam’s mom.

So, something happened six to seven months ago, something beyond Jessica’s death, that would have put these events into motion. I’m wondering if this episode didn’t foreshadow Sam’s growing dark side a bit; at least it left the door open for that possibility. Dean seems more concerned about it than he let on to Sam, that’s for sure.

“The Benders”

People can be scarier than demons; ’nuff said.

“Shadow”

This would be the huge episode I was referring to in “Nightmare.” What the hell just happened? Who the hell is Meg? Is she dead, or just sporting some terribly tacky eye makeup? She did take a swandive from several stories and landed really crooked. Is she working for the actual demon who killed Sam’s mom? So many questions!

The scene with the boys and Dad at the end was so incredibly well-shot and well-acted. I know it was the victims’ hearts that were ripped out in this episode, but a little piece of mine definitely tore while watching the tearful reunion and painful parting of the Winchester family.

“Hell House”

I just have to point out that while Sam and Dean both had their faces ripped open in the last episode, they are somehow unscarred. Is there a supernatural healing power at work here? Did TPTB just want Sam’s face to be as pretty as his bare chest when he got out of the shower (and into his itching-powder-covered clothes)?

It was a good idea to throw in a light, funny episode after the big, evil story arc stuff we got in “Shadow.” On some shows, I feel robbed when they do an episode with no story arc piece, but Supernatural does it right. This was no throw-away episode. The funny pranks, the ridiculous “Ghost-Busters” and the horror movie cliches (um … don’t go in there; if you do, just take the jar and run) were all artfully juxtaposed with the theme: if people believe in something enough, does it exist?

The next installment of my diary will be the last five episodes of season one, and I can hardly wait … am I becoming too “fan-girl?” Nah, not if I can tell you “Route 666″ was boring….

Have you missed some entries of my Diary of a Supernatural Virgin?

Sorry to disappoint you, but it never comes up again. I like to think that maybe the writers were properly ashamed of that episode.

That’s WB ointment–it fixes everything (well, except Sam’s broken wrist in season 2, but that was the actor, not the character).

The Supernatural producers are really good at balancing the comedy with the drama. You can really feel the influence of Kim Manners (and John Shiban in the early days). And Ben Edlund and Jeremy Carver are especially good at writing stories that are incredibly funny but still germane to the story arc.

They come back in season 3 for a hilarious outsider-POV episode.

Sorry, my quotes didn’t come through. I meant it to look like this:

Dean revealed himself to Cassie, which is important and shows us a new side to Dean. I wonder how it will play out in later episodes….

Aw, hate to break the bad news, but every fangirl I’ve ever met hates “Route 666.”
