(Season 2, Episode 4)
“It must be cold there in your shadow.” – Kirby to Nico, on Nico’s slacker brother, George
One thing I love about Lipstick Jungle is that the women are curvy. Ok, maybe not Kim Raver, who’s stick-thin, but Brooke Shields and Lindsay Price both look fairly realistic, compared to other women on TV. I like that.
We continue to learn a little more about the women, like Nico’s childhood in Queens and her working-class family. Nice to see Dan Hedaya playing her dad. I think of him as the dad on 1995’s Clueless, but he’s been working steadily through the years.
The scene with Wendy finally breaking down about losing her job seemed very realistic to me. She had been in denial up to that point, but when she went home early from Lindsay’s charity event (after seeing her former boss, Griffin, there), and then broke down when the rest of the family came home, I could totally relate. And I’m glad she told the truth to her kids, and that they understood that she’s human. I hope Wendy starts her own film production company. That’ll show ‘em.
Rosie Perez is still cracking me up as Victory’s branding assistant, Dahlia. Like when she explains to Victory that the ad guy means “push up the twins” to get more sex appeal into her garbage PSA, and when she calls Rodrigo “Bob the Builder.” More Rosie, please.
And more James Lesure, too. I’m glad to see him anywhere on the tube, but I hope he gets more to do in future episodes.
Point of Interest: The girl who played Rodrigo’s daughter, Celia, is Caitlin Sanchez, who’s also the new voice of Dora the Explorer. I interviewed her last week for Film Gecko, and asked her about playing Celia. She said it was a great experience, but her character didn’t really like Victory in the episode.
That’s for sure. If I’d been Rodrigo, I would have had a serious talk about her behavior and disrespect towards Victory. Hmmm, wonder if that will change eventually. It’s looking like Joe Bennett might be coming back into the picture.
