(Season 1, Episode 7)
“Suppose she gets pregnant! How in the world is she supposed to nurse a baby with fangs?” – Arlene to Sam, on Sookie having sex with Bill
Oh, Sookie. There’s no turning back now. But there’s one thing I don’t understand. I thought if you were bitten by a vampire, you became a vampire. Isn’t that how it works? Isn’t that how Bill became a vampire, when that woman during the Civil War bit him?
Maybe it’s another of those vampire myths that Bill talks about. Apparently, holy water, crucifixes, garlic, and being invisible in mirrors are all myths the vampires themselves started. And can you burn vampires? I’m guessing yes, since some of them apparently burned up in the fire.
So we learn a little more about Sookie and how her uncle mentally abused her when she was little. Just touching, though, and “not nearly as bad as what happens to some girls,” she tells Bill.
It’s so beautiful how Bill wants to protect her. To the point of murdering her uncle and dumping his body in the lake after growling, “Oh, I’m not here for the money. I’m here for Sookie.”
How handy that Tara’s mom can blame all her issues on a demon. Like when Tara says she should clean up her act and go to AA meetings: “I’m not a group person, the demon knows that,” says her mom.
And when Tara mentions the spiked coffee, and her mom says, “I can’t help it. The demon told me to finish off everything in the house today. It’s the demon drinking, not me.” Ok, we’ll go with that. I can think of all kinds of instances where a demon would come in handy.
WTF are Sam and Tara doing? Are they together or not? They’re bugging me.
I love this show, but the blood scenes are a little intense for me. Like when Sookie and Bill are making love, and he bites her and we get a close-up shot of him lapping up her blood. Ugh. This is one instance where I CAN look away — and try to, if I know it’s coming.
Other points of interest:
The vampire mythos that Charlaine Harris created is indeed a bit different from the general mythos out there. In the books, you can kill a vamp by decapitation or fire, but the stake in the heart not so much.
The biting is a bit different, too. You don’t become a vamp just by sharing blood, although I don’t believe anyone has ever been turned in the books (that we get to see) so I’m not exactly sure how it’s done.
Some fun things happen in the book after you’ve shared blood three times, though, so I’ll be wondering if they bring that into the TV series.
The blood doesn’t bother me, but the fact that Sookie and Bill have become bit players has. I could care less about Tara’s Mother/Tara & Sam and I’m completely tired of Jason.
Any why is Sam so broke? He owns the bar and the apartments.
Why is no one mentioning Sam running naked through the park. What was that all about??
*POST AUTHOR*
rgm31 – I was going to mention the Sam-running-naked thing, but I don’t even know what to think about it. Do you think it’s somehow related to the fire? I thought it was Jason at first, stoned out in sparkle-mode. I dunno…
One thing I also forgot to mention in my post was the awesomely somber version of The Rolling Stones’ “Play With Fire” playing over the end credits. I loved it, but my husband, who’s currently learning that song on guitar, didn’t like the True Blood version at all!
In the episode where Bill was turned, they used the classic way to become a vamp…you are bitten, and then must drink from he (or she, in that case) who bit you. Even The Lost Boys didn’t turn until they themselves fed.
Still disliking Jason. The brunette and grandma would have been better returring characters than that asshole. I can’t figure out his purpose. Nothing about him is remotely appealing, not even in an “I enjoy hating this guy” way. I miss gran and what she brought to the show.
Tara and Sam will take a while. Sam is still obviously into Sookie, and it would seem difficult as her best friend to be involved with that. Maybe I’m wrong.
Still loving me some sexy Bill…even if the name is so unfitting. ;-)
I don’t think the “turning” is as simple as being bitten and then drinking because otherwise Sookie should be turned, as she has drank from Bill and been bitten.
What I got from the scene where Bill was turned was that the vamp killed him, or more precisely left him on the verge of death by draining him of his blood, and then he drank from her turning him.
To turn into a vampire you must be drained to the point of death and then feed on the vampires blood.
Then you die then wake as the undead.
