Boston Legal – Dances With Wolves

ABC

ABC

(Season 5, Episode 3)

This past week, I got a ToyFare exclusive Captain Kirk figure in a pin-striped suit. But you know what that means I really got. That’s right: Denny Crane! So I’ll have my own Denny Crane riding co-pilot and watching tonight’s installment of Boston Legal with me. Tonight, Denny is arrested (again!), this time for shooting a man in self-defense with a concealed weapon. You know how Denny feels about his right to arms. Meanwhile, Alan tries to help a sex surrogate he knows get joint custody of her daughter.

Boston Legal continues recurring characters from the past. Tonight’s special guest holds a “special” place in the hearts of both Jerry and Alan, as she helped both deal with their sexual issues. Of course, in doing so, she’s now jeopardized her custody situation with her ten-year old daughter. Have you noticed how almost anyone that the lawyers of this show come into contact with during their personal lives wind up calling on their legal services at some point?

My wife used to sell sex toys but I don’t think that made her an unfit mother, and she didn’t quit upon becoming one. Granted, selling them isn’t the same as if she’d been having sex at those parties, but still. Should it be reason enough?

Legal Advice

  • In the sex case, Joanna’s husband Martin’s lawyer was leading the hell out of him when he was on the stand. Plus, he’s not an authority on what is and isn’t going on during teen child development.
  • Loved Carl’s questioning of Denny. Fast cracks back and forth. “Boom.” “Boom.” “And boom!”
  • I’m scared of Judge Paula Stern, too. And she didn’t even let poor Alan finish his closing! Doesn’t she know he’s famous for his closings?
  • On the balcony, I suddenly noticed William Shatner’s hairpiece. Usually it’s pretty well blended, but not so much tonight. Lighting too harsh maybe?

It was interesting that Carl threw out the idea of Denny faking the “mad cow.” Honestly, I’d never even considered it, though certainly it is possible. He’s surprisingly devious as evidenced by his handling of his own case tonight.

Meanwhile, Alan is re-analyzing everything he is at his core. Could it be possible that he experiences some growth and development as a character by series end? After over four years of his lecherous behavior and shenanigans around the office, it actually would make for a satisfying conclusion to see that maybe Alan will find some peace and happiness in his life. He’s a decent man and he deserves something good for himself. And what would be better than peace of mind.

Denny, on the other hand, will probably die at the end of this series. Or at least that would be a great way to wrap it up. I thought he was going to die tonight when Jerry delivered his astonishing closing, but then of course he was behind it the whole time.

Letting the series end with his passing would set up the next stage of Alan’s life. Certainly it’s nearly impossible for Alan to become a better person under the influence of Denny. Imagine a touching closing scene with Alan alone on the roof. Or maybe joined by Shirley. Man, it’s depressing to think of it all ending, regardless of how it goes down.

I’m really getting sick of the Denny shoots someone because he has loads of guns stories. More so because the show is running out of episodes.

However Jerry’s closing was perfect, and Denny being behind it was even better.

I also like how you post about the show a little bit before the review goes up. That way if you are a little late there is still a topic.

Loved the vigilante scene. Funny! Does that make me a terrible person? I still loved it!
