NBC knows a good thing when they find it. After the smashing success of their Bionic Woman remake, and what has clearly been a phenomenal response to their update of Knight Rider … Oh, wait …
OK, maybe it’s not so much going back to the well as it is getting back on the horse that bucked you … and then stepped on your crotch. Despite those recent miscues in the re-imagining game, the network is going to try it again. They’ve picked up an adaptation of The Partridge Family. The show’s writer, Jeff Rake, promises a more contemporary version of the story. Rather than the kids recruiting their mother, the new incarnation finds Mom “pimping her kids in order to create a wholesome-slash-sexy cash cow.” Alrighty.
I’m not exactly bullish on this one. Rake has worked on some good shows, with Bones, The Practice, and Boston Legal among his credits. But dang, the smart money on anything NBC touches at this point is betting on fail. Watching the destruction of the network has become an odd 20-hour-a-week reality show. It’s got all that drama and intrigue.
Teasing you with Chuck and Heroes at the start of the week, and then they just puke on their shoes for a couple days, trying to sell you on junk like Knight Rider. They further confuse you by proving that yes, a blind squirrel does occasionally find a nut, when they bust out Thursday with The Office. All this while playing the scheduling shell game with things like Life and Medium. It’s on here. No, it’s on there. Then, much like watching a nutty bunch of Survivor contestants bungle their strategy week after week, you’re left, palm on forehead, thinking, “What the hell are they doing?”
Anyway, Partridge Family, pimping kids, sexy cash cow.
My money is on “cancelled by week 6″.
NBC really is nuts. FOX may be foolish in their canceling great shows … but NBC is just nuts.
What’s next, Alf? Facts of Life? Little House on the Prairee? They need to get some new writers to come up with something original instead of rehashing the same old crap. Then get some new execs at the nets to put it on the air and give it a chance to grow and succeed.
Give us ALF!
Or, you know, come up with some new ideas.
I’ll pass thanks. You fooled me with Bionic Woman…never again.
I feel like an old man saying this but…Remember when NBC was good. It’s been a while.
Also I still hate them for canceling Journeyman.
