Mark your calendars people — FOX made two good decisions this week: canceling the boring Do Not Disturb and ordering nine more episodes of mystery sci-fi series Fringe. Along with the usual initial 13 episodes order it received a few months ago, Fringe‘s first season will be of 22 episodes.
The series, starring cutie Dawson’s Creek‘s Joshua Jackson, has been doing well in the ratings, which is why the network decided to order a full season.
So far this TV season, Fringe is one of the very few new series I’ve officially made part of my weekly TV viewing lineup (I’m saving a spot for My Own Worst Enemy and I am hooked to 90210 mostly out of nostalgia). Being a fan of series like the Alias, X-Files and Lost, Fringe falls right into my alley.
Some people complained that the episodes were too self-contained but, especially in light of last night’s episode with John Scott popping up at the end of the episode, it’s clear that there will be season-long mysteries also. I’ve been entertained by the cases of the week and the characters and am happy that we will see more of them in the coming weeks. This pick up will also mean more conspiracy theories for us to think about!
This is great news! I love the show, and I have also made it a part of my regular shows to watch. I think it’s really funny on top of all the mad science going on. Not that I would want to miss an episode, but if someone misses and episode or never has seen it before, they can just pick up and not really have to know what happened the week before, unlike Lost. Fox has finally figured out how to not cancel a show.
Fridge is a fun show, but they better not string us along like they do with Lost. Plus the woman lead is the most boring character on TV today.
Depends on your definition of “doing well”. 9m viewers must have been disappointing for Fox for the series premier and after it got its first House bump (9m -> 13m) it fell right back down to 9.
It did come up to 10 this week which is great but after all the hype and promise of another Abrams hit, Fringe doesn’t look like it’ll be competitive with Lost (as far as Abrams’s shows go) and certainly not on the high end (anyone remember when Lost S2 debuted to 23 million?) By series premier, Fringe barely did half the business.
It’s also not winning its time slot.
So yeah, 9-10 is good enough for a full season and the demo numbers look good, but you just know that Fox expected a lot more than this, and it’s only fair to acknowledge the disappointment.
Honestly, I don’t know what most people see in this show. It can’t be that I don’t like the genre, since I was an X-Files addict and love Lost and Alias (both J.J. Abrams). But when I watch this show I am bored to death… I am dreading to watch episode four. And I agree with Oreo: Anna Torv is beautiful but she can’t act and has no presence whatsoever (at least on this show).
It’s great for fans of the show that it is picked up. But my heart bleeds, when I think about the shows that will get cancelled instead, which are far more creative :(
I love this show. I am a big sci-fi nut but that is not the reason I watch this one. I wasn’t quite sure Joshua Jackson would do well. Wasn’t really a big fan of Dawson’s Creek but I love his character’s interaction with the rest of them. He can pull off cocky adult with lost child issues really well.
Wow, I’m so relieved! This was the only new show I planned to even try this year. I’ve been burned too many times in the past couple of years (Moonlight, Jericho, Men in Trees, Traveler, etc.).
I love this show! I wasn’t an X-Files fan but this show I can really get in to. I think it’s the characters of Walter and his son that really interest me the most. I also like that they mix humor with the drama.
PS. Fox would be foolish to think any show up against DWTS could ever win that time slot!
