ABC
Who doesn’t love a good marathon? Of course the show has to be good… well, entertaining at the very least, but there is undeniably something satisfying in sitting your fat ass in front of the TV for huge amounts of time. Sometimes you just need to lose yourself, escape life for a little while (or a whole day) and visit some other exciting universe. It’s why we all love TV, isn’t it? In any case, here is a list of shows that I have lost multiple hours to at one time or another:
- Soap: I’m far too young (and good looking… jealous?) to have watched Soap when it was first on, but both of my sisters used to talk about it all the time. It must have been the mid 90s when the show started replaying on Comedy Central. To kick off their coverage, Comedy Central ran a full weekend marathon of the entire series. My whole family sat around that weekend watching Soap and doing nothing else. Good times.
- Alias: When Alias first started I didn’t watch it. I remember thinking that the first episode looked stupid. They kept showing clips of Jennifer Garner running around in a fiery red wig. All I could think is that they stole that whole bit from Run Lola Run, a movie which I happen to be a big fan of. I didn’t watch it on principle, I guess. Weak, I know. After lots of people in my life told me how great it was, I decided I should probably hop onto the bandwagon. Luckily for me, ABC decided to play a marathon on ABC family on New Year’s day. I think I brought the laziness to a whole new level, staying in bed all day and watching every episode to date. I got hooked… at least until it started seriously sucking.
- Eli Stone: The darling of the writer’s strike, Eli Stone. This charming little show probably would have gone nowhere if the writer’s strike had never happened. I figured I would give it a try as it was one of the only shows that was fresh when it was airing. I usually record shows that are on at ten or later, so I built up a big collection of these on my DVR. One lazy Sunday I started watching and ended up cleaning it out, watching 5 or 6 episodes straight. Always as fun as it is heavy-handed, it’s a show worth watching. I can’t wait until this one comes back!
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I don’t think I can even count the number of times that I have seen some of these episodes. I’ve seen every episode at least twice… early seasons at least four or five times. I don’t think I need to tell you that it is one of my all time favorite shows. There were many times that I watched several disks in one sitting, but one Saturday comes to mind specifically. It was back when I was in college and had a ton of homework to do. I turned on the TV and popped in some Buffy while solving my ever-so-exciting physics problems. By my recollection I watched 12 episodes that day. My awesomeness knows no bounds.
- Twin Peaks: I’ve talked before about my obsession for Twin Peaks. I couldn’t keep it to myself, and I dragged a friend into the obsession with me, forcing her to watch the entire first season with me in one day (relax, it’s only 7 episodes, plus the pilot… okay, that’s still a lot). She became as big a fan as I am… well, she became a fan.
- Iron Chef: There must be something about New Year’s day that causes complete sloth to overtake people. I’m thinking it’s lack of sleep combined with excessive consumption of alcohol. In any case, television has taken notice and there tends to be a whole slew of different marathons on the boob tube on January 1. Food Network decided to get in on the action a few years back, showing a whole day of Iron Chef. Not the classy American version either, it was the original, dubbed, campy Japanese version. What’s more fun than sitting on your ass and watching the many ways you can cook a shark fin?
Writing this post has made me realize what a lazy sloth I truly am. How about you? Any notable marathons in your TV history? Tell me about them, help me feel better about myself.

i had bought season one of heroes after seeing season two * and hadn’t seen #1* and had like a two day spree of watching it because it was during the febuary vacation
Eli Stone is one of the better shows on TV today … imho …
One of the shows that I’ve spent all day watching is Dead Like Me
Despite having seen all the episodes multiple times already, I sat down with some friends and watched all three seasons of Arrested Development in two days. Twelve hours a day on a Friday and Saturday. Totally worth it.
