(Season 4, Episode 1 – Season Premiere)
In one of the big highlights of the new television season for me, the boys from Supernatural are back. And after having had a look at the big season four premiere, it seems that Team Supernatural hasn’t lost a step over the off season. The new season kicked off with what was, on all levels, a great episode.
It didn’t look like that was going to be the case from the beginning. I was actually annoyed with the show during the opening scene. My initial thought was, “After all that we saw in season three, all of that buildup, Dean is only going to be in hell for 12 seconds?” I have to say though, I was right back on board with the idea when the camera pulled back and revealed everything crushed around his grave. What could it all mean?
And that gets us right to the big mystery of the new season. Why was Dean pulled out? And just who was it that did the pulling? Sure, we were offered an answer for that last bit in the closing of the show, but are you all set to just take Castiel (Misha Collins) at his word? I’m not. There are still so many possibilities for just what his true nature could be. That being said, Misha Collins is perfect for the part. Great casting there.
Of course, there is another new mystery to deal with, and another bit of casting. Our boy Sammy has spent his time away from Dean becoming a demon killing badass. Weren’t you just completely blown away when he held out his hand and dispensed with the demon waitress? And then they followed it up with the big Ruby reveal. I was totally caught off guard by that one.
I was assuming Ruby would be back, for the simple fact that she was featured in the opening. And I was pretty sure that Genevieve Cortese wasn’t being brought in for just that one uncomfortable scene in the motel, but they got me. I didn’t put it all together until she walked into the diner. I really like the idea of Ruby still being in the picture, even in a new body, and I’m on board with Cortese in the role. But then, I watched her on Wildfire for a long time. I’m curious to see what the general fan reaction to her is going to be. Because, as we know, Supernatural is a tough gig for an actress.
So, there we are. One in the books and season four is off to a great start. I’m already looking forward to learning more about Castiel, what else Sam and Ruby have been up to, and the inevitable talk Sam and Dean have about his new powers. It should be fun.
Amazing premiere! Something about the opening recap montage to the music of AC/DC always makes me fall in love with this show all over again. It never fails! I’m still not sure what part Ruby is going to play in all this…it doesn’t seem like there’s much she can do anymore except cause tension between the Brothers Winchester. To me this belongs in the OMG/WTF! category because I did not see any of it coming. I was even starting to think halfway through…after Azazel and Lilith, what new demon can they come possibly come up with that’s going to take this somewhere new? And when Castiel said he was an angel I FLIPPED because this is exactly what the show needed. All around great ep.
This episode was awesome. My only complaint about the episode is that it wasn’t longer.
I absolutely loved the way they brought Dean back.
I can’t believe that Sam’s using his powers. But the real question is is he sleeping with Ruby.
BTW, I don’t like the new actress.
