The Monkees after The Monkees – VIDEO

NBC

One of the guilty pleasures I have is my enjoyment of The Monkees as both a band and a television show. There was just something so crazed about them while on the screen that it brought something new to a world of television filled with a lot of 60s fluff. Something irreverent that ushered in a new wave of rebellious programming that lasted well into the early ’70s.

Yet, as usually happens with pioneers, they tend to level off and get comfortable after they have initially claimed victory. The Monkees is a perfect example of this. Once their show ended in 1968 their guest performances became very standard and, for lack of a better word, dull. Before that, though, they tried once more to explore their rebellious side with the NBC special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee.

The next few videos show some of the antics that when on during this extremely psychadelic special. The first features the ‘Prefab Four’ singing ‘At the Hop’ in a scene that harkens back to the days of the 1950s rock and roll reviews. The next features the great Mike Nesmith singing a duet with himself. Watch and decide.
