I’ve been on a pretty severe yogurt kick lately. It’s really a perfect snack to bring to work, and is a relatively healthy choice. Yeah, I’m not thrilled with the amount of sugar in most of the yogurts available, but it’s certainly a better choice than a pint of ice cream. For a while I was addicted to Stonyfield Farm brand organic yogurt. It’s thick and creamy, and really delicious. I still love it, but I have recently made a new discovery.
As you probably know, I have a slight obsession with Whole Foods Market. I’m there … let’s just say I’m there often. One of the great things about Whole Foods is the enormous selection of yogurts. Whenever I shop for it I usually spend some time ogling all the different varieties before grabbing a few of the Stonyfield Farm containers (lemon is a recent favorite). It isn’t that I’m unadventurous, but all the fancy yogurt is a bit pricey (read: over a dollar per six ounce serving).
However, everything changed when a couple days ago I noticed that Chobani Greek style yogurt was on sale. I picked up a few to try them and I knew I was going to be in trouble — and I was right, I’m addicted. The Greek style yogurt is so thick and creamy, it’s impossible to resist. It’s sour and delicious, and plays really well with the fruit flavors (or even the honey flavor). Seriously, I think I’ve been averaging about two containers a day, and if I’m being completely honest, I paused midway through writing this post to have myself a delicious helping of pineapple flavored Chobani Greek style yogurt. It was awesome.
I’ve been complaining about the price of the fancy yogurt, but I came to the conclusion that I’m worth the few extra dimes that a really great yogurt costs. Now I just have to try some of the other fancy yogurts available at Whole Foods. Although, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to cheat on Chobani now that I’ve developed a severe addiction to the extra thick yogurt.
You clearly haven’t tried Fage yet. I literally cannot stand the texture of Chobani. I tried it, because it was almost half the price of the Fage, but the texture is chalky. If you want smooth, thick and creamy, Fage is so superior to Chobani that I can’t even find the words to express this. Then again, if you like the Chobani it’s got a nicer price point so maybe you don’t want to even try the Fage….
My mistake was starting with the Fage, now I can never go back.
And if you don’t like the sugar, just get the plain and stir in some fresh fruit. I actually think anything but plain yogurt tastes disgusting b/c the sour and the sweet don’t mesh for me. I will swirl a little honey into goat yogurt, though.
I have been trying different varieties of yogurt recently. I started with Stonyfield’s Greek yogurt (Oikos). I got the plain kind and mix in honey because, well, I need to satisfy my sweet tooth. It was pretty good. Also tried Chobani this week and enjoyed it. I have an Australian yogurt called Wallaby in my fridge, waiting to be devoured.
And just today I tried an Icelandic yogurt called siggi’s. It is the thickest yogurt I’ve ever had, and I don’t think it has any sugar or artifical sweeteners. Maybe you would like it – I personally like my yogurt sweeter, but I’m trying to lay off the sugar for a while.
I’ve been meaning to try Fage. I think Yahoo recently ranked the best yogurts via a blind taste test, and Fage was the favorite.

Okay, I don’t mean to be taking over the yogurt post, Bob, but I had to report back. Wallaby yogurt is not good. It’s runny and too sweet (even for me). I had another siggi’s, and it’s too thick for me – I mean, you can stand up your spoon in it and the spoon won’t fall or even move, not even if you shake it.
I tried plain, 0% fat Fage this morning, and I have to agree with Deb – it’s the best yogurt I’ve ever had. Perfect creamy texture, just the right thickness. I’m sold. I thought the Fage fans were exaggerating, but it really is that good.

I have heard similar complaints about the siggi. And thanks for the heads up on the Wallaby. I see it all the time in the store, but haven’t tried it yet.
I have no doubt the Fage is delicious, but I feel guilty spending the money on the Chobani, and the Fage is a lot more expensive.
Bob, I got a 35.3 oz container of Fage yogurt for $2 today. I went to the local fresh produce market (Hispanic owned), and found it for a fantastic price. You are paying too much at Whole Foods (which I enjoy visiting but not only when I want to spoil myself with some drunken goat cheese).
Yes, I have a total Whole Foods problem.
2 dollars is insane. That’s what I pay for a 6 oz container of the Fage at WF. I did buy one last week just to try it. It was good, and I might even say a little bit better than the Chobani, but the 6 oz is really only 5.3 and I don’t think it’s worth the extra 50 cents. I’m still happy with the Chobani. I do get the Fage thing, though, it was delicious.
