Fourteen things to do with strawberries

strawberries2

There’s a wee bit of celebrating going on at our house, because we’ve now gotten several batches of strawberries from our CSA Farm. I hope that you’ve all experienced the pleasure of picking a strawberry, warm from the sun, off the bush and popping it into your mouth before it’s even had time to lose one drop of the sweet juice.

If you haven’t, then my condolences.

Admittedly, we are so crazy about fresh berries that they mostly end up getting eaten before we even have a chance to think about how to store them, let alone cook something with them. You, however, may find yourself with a glut of strawberries as well as some will power, so I’m here to help.

1. Slice strawberries and layer them with plain yogurt. If you must, swirl in some raw honey, but you really don’t need it.

2. If you’ve got any rhubarb, you could make this twist on the classic pairing of strawberry rhubarb bars — they’ve got ginger in them!

3. Bake oatmeal strawberry muffins.

4. Eat some strawberries with Calebrese salami.

5. Make some strawberry vinaigrette (which incidentally contains no vinegar — so really, wouldn’t you just call it a dressing?) and drizzle it on spinach and goat cheese salad, chicken or dip some crusty bread into it.

6. Make chocolate-covered strawberries. You can dig up all the fancy recipes you want, but all you really need are Ghiradelli 60% bittersweet chocolate chips. Melt them in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring each time, until smooth. Dip, twirl and let set on wax paper. Add no butter, cream, nothing … you just don’t need it.

7. Slice over coconut milk ice cream.

8. Puree and serve over pancakes.

9. Make grilled duck with strawberry-fig sauce.

10. Serve over goat cheese cheesecake.

11. Toss together a strawberry, melon and avocado salad. So easy and so impressive.

12. The combination of strawberries and black pepper is captivating, so you and your honey would love to share this strawberry black pepper tart for two.

13. Slice onto your favorite homemade granola, or Heidi Swanson’s honey toasted fruit muesli.

14. Make a strawberry fruit smoothie.

There are about 4, 834, 792 more things you could do with strawberries that I didn’t list. What do you do with your strawberries?

I made Strawberry Rhubarb soup the other evening and then posted about it. It was the first time I’ve ever used rhubarb.

My friend jenski just posted about buttermilk and berries.

I just tried strawberries with sour cream and brown sugar, which was pretty awesome.

Try making a simple salsa (great with pork roast) of strawberries, vidalia onions and basil, perhaps with a bit of aged balsamic vinegar to tie it together.

Maybe some strawberries and cheese for dessert? Goat cheese or an aged gouda come to mind.

Finally, don’t forget about strawberries and champagne!

Oh, I’ve got pork tenderloin planned for Monday night, and I was going to try a rhubarb chipotle sauce, but that vidalia strawberry salsa sounds divine. I bet it would go well on chicken too.
