Jeff’s Stroganoff – Out of the box

I tried a box of Hamburger Helper Beef Stroganoff once. It was not bad, but the powdered sour cream and the little noodles were not all that impressive. Now I like the idea of all the ingredients in a box so all you have to do is add the meat and a quick meal is ready, but I can make this same thing from scratch and have a much better tasting and more filling meal that is cheaper and will take the same amount of time.

Jeff’s Stroganoff is a very simple and tasty dish. The prep time is minimal and it will fill you up. This is one of my favorite recipes for using the ground meat from my hunting successes. The small package of powdered sour cream that comes in the box is just not enough. Also the dried onion in the season pack is not the best either. I prefer fresh onion in my dishes.

Jeff’s Stroganoff

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground elk, deer, bear
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 pack brown gravy mix
  • 1 16-oz container sour cream
  • 3-4 cups milk*
  • 1/2 bag egg noodles
  • salt and pepper or seasoning salt

Brown ground meat and diced onion until onion is soft and the meat is cooked thoroughly  Add salt and pepper or seasoning salt to taste.

Mix in the gravy package. Add the sour cream and milk and mix well. Now add the noodles, reduce the heat and simmer for 20  minutes stirring occasionally.

* add more milk if necessary.

I’m no fan of hamburger helper. But I do love beef and noodles. This is a very quick and easy recipe.

Okay, Jeff. Not to start another war between us, but bear? Really? I had no idea that people eat bear. Is that something you actually do? Because if so, you just blew my mind.

I’m pretty sure that just about every animal in existence is eaten by somebody, somewhere. There’s a restaurant in my area that served (don’t know if they still do) a platter of “exotic meats” which included bear, zebra, kangaroo, and I don’t even know what else. I remember reading a story about a restaurant in (I think) Pennsylvania where there was a huge uproar because the chef/owner served lion meat, which he purchased from an actual farm in the US where they’re raised solely for food.

Surely there was a pun intended when you said there was a huge “uproar” heh…. ;-)

Actually, my own pun didn’t even occur to me! That’s pretty funny. :D

Yes Kona I really do eat Bear. I love Bear meat. I do not eat as much Bear meat as I would like because they are very hard to hunt unless you bait them in or use hounds to hunt them. While I have no issue with either of those methods, they are not for me. I prefer to use spot and stalk method to hunt. I also know people that like to eat Cougar meat. I have never tried Cougar, but when I get a chance I will post a recipe for Cougar as well.
