It’s that time of the week again, time to take a look at what movies are opening this weekend — or today (and in some cases, late last night). Of course the big opening this week is Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but instead of running scared this weekend a couple of studios have decided to do a little counter-programming in an effort to attract the demoraphic groups who may not be interested in giant, fighting robots from outer space: adults over the age of 50 (Larry Crowne) and tween girls (Monte Carlo). Let’s take a look at the trailers and see if these hold any promise.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, John Turturro
Rated PG-13 for intense prolonged sequences of sci-fi action violence, mayhem and destruction, and for language, some sexuality and innuendo
No guessing about this one as I have already seen it. Check back for the official review, but I can say that it is spectacular! No kidding! We’ll pretend the second one never happened.

Larry Crowne
Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Bryan Cranston
Rated PG-13 for brief strong language and some sexual content
I’m just barely out of my imagined demographic for this movie, so it holds absolutely no appeal for me. I would ask if it’s believable that Julia could ever be attracted to Tom, but then there was that whole Lyle Lovett thing she had so it’s not that far out, I guess. Still, wild horses couldn’t put a gun to my head and drag me to this. Give me a year or two though and I’ll probably be first in the demographic line.

Monte Carlo
Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy
Rated PG for brief mild language
The film’s tagline is “Discover Who You Are.” Really? By pretending to be someone else? Okay, I’m not in this demographic either and it’s certainly not the first tween dream movie about mistaken identity with an, ahem, actress playing dual roles. It’s totally a girlie movie but it has some great casting with Gossip Girl‘s Meester, Cassidy (love her!), Andie MacDowall and Glee‘s Cory Monteith. I see this becoming a sleepover hit on video.
What do you think of this week’s cinematic possibilities?
